  • Darkness my old friend

Details are lost in the holiday haze but last week 7 revelers braved the darkest day of the year for a solstice beatdown.

Warmarama in the cold cold air – SSHs followed by a loop, Don Quixotes then another loop, plankjacks then another loop, and so on and so forth with 8ish loops around.

Mosey to the road where we did a curb crawl with the last man hitting 5 hand release mirkins then going to the front. Lunge walk all way back. Run it back with a curb crawl on the opposite side.

Mosey to the dark wall for a Pigskin special – wall sits, balls to the wall, 15 donkey kicks. 3 times through.

Long mosey all the way down to the cul de sac, then back to the base of the hill. Bernie all the way up.

Mary with mirkins and an ab exercise of choice.

There may have been more action but we kept it moving with almost no breaks in between.

COT – every day after the solstice brings more light.

  • Sounds of the season

It’s that time of year again. No, not the holidays. It’s time for Spotify Wrapped: Snuff Underground.

Take a trip to the outermost recesses of the mind with Snuff’s top songs of 2023.

Warmarama: SSHs x 50, mirkins, LBCs, DQs, cherry pickers, arm circles.

11s on the basketball court: WW2s & jump squats.

Mosey to the lot, pay the toll on the way. Then a Dora: timer runs around the other island, with 100 squats, 200 mountain climbers, 300 flutter kicks.

Parking space bear crawl with ascending mirkins, to 10. Run it back with lunge walks and jump squats.

Mosey back to the courts, pay the toll on the way.

Just enough time for some high speed mankillers. Light stretching and we’re done.

Thanks for taking a musical journey through my year.

COT and prayers for those in need. Channel that strength of the morning and offer it up wherever and whenever you can: to your family, friends, coworkers, a smile, a text, messages of support. Give.

  • Hayao Miyazaki

Last week at The Forge 7 men gathered to do all their favorite workouts, ad nauseam, until they were no long a favorite workout. And to discuss Japanese animation.

Mosey to the front, warmarama with 44 SSHs. Lots of other warmups to end on 44 LBCs. What could possibly be the significance? No idea.

Mosey to the amphitheater where YHC queued up a killer playlist featuring all the greatest hits from the Studio Ghibli movies. To his surprise and complete dismay, not a single person present had ever even heard of these movies. So the playlist was canceled and a new workout began.

Too much of a good thing: PAX does a continuous exercise while one at a time, the timer box jumps the big stairs then comes back down. Flutterkicks, arm circles, monkey humpers, APD, arm raises, all the easiest movements that become crushingly hard after doing them nonstop.

After a while it was too much of too much of a good thing, so we switched to:

Super tooth fairies: 5 incline burpees on the steps all the way up, then dip + 5 plank jacks on the way down. 3x Incline Lieutenant Dans on the way up, scrunchy frogs on the way down. Beautiful sunrise.

Mosey back to the flag where gratitude was given.

Here are some Studio Ghibli movies for homework:

Spirited Away. Howl’s Moving Castle (YHC’s personal favorite). My Neighbor Totoro. Princess Monoke. Ponyo. It would be amazing to be able to watch any of these movies again for the very first time – count yourself lucky.

  • 2Q

8 gathered in the rainy gloom for a special edition double q partner beatdown featuring OC and Snuff.

Both agreed that neither of them would have gotten out of bed on such a rainy cold morning if not for the fact that they couldn’t let each other down.

Warmarama under the pavilion – 50 SSHs with Chaplain arriving just in time to complete the even number. 20 DQs, 60 arm circles, 40 LBCs, some plank jacks and other stuff.

At that point Snuff was out of ideas so OC came up with countdown to November 11s: burpees and WW2s. Slight audible: booyah burpees and booyah WW2s. Teamwork.

10 minutes of mirkins, squats and WW2s while the partner ran to the gate and back.

Partner carry halfway across the field, then switch. Wheelbarrow back across the other half, then switch. 3 rounds of 20x PLTs.

Back to the flag with a stop to pay the toll: 10 partner dips + 10 partner mirkins on the bridge.

    COT.

It’s true – accountability is what carries us. Funny how we’re all just trying to keep up with one another – that’s the gift we give each other and that’s what keeps us coming back out no matter how deep the gloom. Who in your life do you hold accountable?

  • Sure Shot

9 Beastie Boys gathered in the gloom to kick it Root Down. Meanwhile, YHCs hounds were out on the town having escaped earlier that morning by digging a giant hole under the fence. Sabotage.

Warmarama with SSHs, DQs, helicopters, arm circles and more arm circles, shoulder taps, Alabama Prom dates, LBCs, etc etc.

Mosey to the middle school for a stair climb triple check: Hoedowns squats, timer runs up and around.

Mosey around the front for another stair climb triple check: Dips, WW2s, timer runs up around around.

Mt Chaplin climb triple check: Flutter kicks and one other thing while timer ran up the hill and back down.

Back to the flag for an ascending squat parking space lunges, ran it back with bear crawl ascending leg lifts.

Gratitude for the morning and yes, the hounds were found.

  • Talk is cheap

Lucky 13, mosey to the cul de sac, warmarama.

Lightpole 11s: Imperial Sumo Squat Walkers + hand-release mirkins.

Lower lot lady of the night 4 corner abs: 20 LBCs, 30 flutters, 40 plank jacks, 50 American Hammers.

All you got sprint up the hill to the flag.

COT with gratitude. Thanks for showing up and putting in the work.

  • The Great Pig Race of Life

12 Soggy Bottom Boys escaped from the chain gang of sweet slumber and set out in search of treasure. Set to the sounds of one of the greatest soundtracks ever did sung.

Big Rock Candy Mountain warmarama SSHs, rapid fire DQs, squats, cherry pickers, Imperial walkers, mirkins, LBCs, etc etc.

Men of Constant sorrow triple check, timer runs and the others do flutterkicks and squats.

Down to the river to pray with another triple check, timer bear crawls up the ramp and the others do plank jacks and WW2s until the sirens turned Senor Frog into a horny toad.

Bodos had a great story about the Chesterfield County Fair and an illusionist who made a girl named Dixie disappear. There was also a pig race involved. It was at this point that the Coen Brothers themed Q went off the rails.

It was decided to do A Great Pig Relay Race in honor of the new parking lot arrows. Teams of 3 bear crawled around the arrows while oinking with ferocity. A teacher pulled into the parking lot and parked right in the middle of the entire spectacle. And still, the race went on. A last minute push by Donald Rumproast to defeat Hilary Bacon in a repeat of the the 2016 Virginia state fair. YHC is clearly high on the hog.

Winning team only had to do clockwork mirkins while the others did clockwork burpees until we gave up. A little boat canoe to wrap it up.

Thanks for indulging YHC – good times were had and lots of laughs rang out. Gratitude to be out there with each other, working hard. The treasure was found – it was the good times we had along the way. Remember to keep on the sunny side of life.

  • Millennial Falcons

Huguenot High School, home of the Falcons, played host to an FNG takeover.

Warmarama with all usual suspects: SSHs, DQs, helicopters, copperhead squats, Ukrainian soldiers, tempo mirkins, Rosalita dips, dead man hang etc etc.

Mosey to the amphitheater where DTH commented that ‘YHC has that look, like he’s making it up right now.’ Obviously!

Called for a Millennial where we would do 100 reps of an exercise. PAX immediately chimed in that YHC could not do math: “That’s a Centennial, dumbo.” Jokes on them because they just gave me the idea to do it 10x. IE a Millennial. School is back in session.

7 reps at the top of 7 steps, then 7 reps back down again for a clean 98. First man to finish calls out and everyone comes back down, then winner picks the next round. Lots of competition but DTH, NTB and Chaplain were in it to win it. Incline mirkins, Bobby something jump squats, arm circles, oblique crunches, monkey humpers, Freddie Mercuries, shoulder taps, step ups and SSHs.

Mosey to the flag for the last round which was burpees until time.

COT with gratitude for the day, for the challenges that make us stronger, for the spirit we carry out into the day.

Welcome to Scram – former nuke engineer now retired (shut down). Welcome to XO – there were many great names but YHC made an executive decision for a Navy guy. Glad to see you both come out. Millennial was a great way to balance out the challenge for both the vets and the new guys, the ultimate in you vs you routines. SYITG.

  • Light Breathwork

It started with 10 but during the warmarama we picked up an FNG and then soon after, El Chapin.

Mosey to the back lot for some SSHs, DQs, helicopters, mirkins, LBCs, copperhead squats, among other things.

4 corners lady of the night with 10 WW2s, 20 mirkins, 30 jump squats, 40 monkey humpers.

Top the stairs triple check with wall sits, dips, timer runs down the stairs then back up the other side.

Some light hill work with slope style 11s. 10 squats up top, 1 hand-release mirkin at the bottom.

A little over halfway in and we were all smoked by the humidity, so we took a seat in the bleachers for some breath work / body awareness practice. Box breathing with 5 count, then soreness awareness while breathing. A good way to recuperate before the mosey continued.

Mosey to the back of the ballfields then all the way around to the front basketball court. Circled back for the stragglers then arm raises in cadence all the way to the court.

Increasing rep suicides with ball dippers, mirkins, American hammers, and flutter kicks. Light stretching at the end.

Circled up. Welcome ‘Risky Business’ and so great to see El Chapin back out after his world travels.

  • Space Tourism

A dynamic duo posted the day after the 4th. Everyone else must have been recovering from the convergence.

Mosey to the lower field and low-key warmarama with no cadence. Deep red clouds set the whole field ablaze in color.

11s across the field. Sunrise appreciation exercises. 11s again. A junior varsity love hill. Wall sit burnouts, elbow plank burnouts, another set of 11s. Back to the flag for some ab burnout. No cadence, just quietude.

Circled up with the runners and took us out.

Really excellent morning, a bit more contemplative kind of workout.

Shoutout to Pigskin for showing up and putting in the work. SYITG.
