  • Foul Weather Friends

Wet.  Cold.  A sweet 16 came ready to embrace the suck and workout.

    COP

    • SSH
    • APD (go ahead and get wet)
    • Don Quixotes – Saab speed
    • Arm Circle – The cat burglar did not appear.
    • Russian Soldiers

Mosey back to the tennis courts for B.O.M.B.S.  Partner up and one runs the inside perimeter of the tennis courts and the other does the following:

    • 50 Burpees
    • 100 SSH
    • 150 Merkins
    • 200 LBCs
    • 250 Squats

Mosey to the soccer field for an exercise inspired by the video Bleeder attached to a recent backblast.  Bear crawl the width of the soccer field.  Flatline was up front and channeling his Ursa Major skills.  Next time we will think about the entire field.

Back to the school for a Triple Check

    • BTTW
    • Elbow Plank
    • Run to the fence and 10 Merkins

Up against the wall for a Line O’ Peckers.  Chicken peckers that is, lighting the fuse from both ends and meeting in the middle.  With the mud, it was a little difficult to not slide or sink.  Needed advanced BTTW skills to anchor in.

    50 Merkins OYO

Dealers Choice Mary – American Hammers, WWII, Flutter Kicks, Rosalitas, Box Cutters.

Back to the VSF and YHC took us out.

    NMS:

Mumble chatter was a minimum today.  Perhaps the oppressive gloom had something to do with it.  It was great to see the Hoedown clown car roll up.  Way to represent!

For those running the race this weekend, enjoy the run!  All of your training got you to this point and you are ready.  This is something to savor.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • Free Smells

We had runners and bikers of all different distances and routes.  All bases were covered.

Runners took the following routes with some arriving early for their bonus miles.

    4 Milers

    • West on Grove to Granite.
    • Granite to Patterson, east on Patterson
    • Patterson to Willow Lawn Drive to Monument
    • East on Monument to Westmoreland and home to the VSF

    5 and 6 Milers

    • East on Grove to Malvern; Malvern across Broad
    • Take a left on Dabney which will turn into Bethlehem
    • Left on Staples Mill at the Wawa
    • Left on Monument
    • 5s come home on Westmoreland, 6s come home on Malvern to Grove

    Gomer Pyle took us out.

    NMS:

The Pax was moving fast this morning with elite runners in both the 5s and 6s.  It was good to see Phonics, Offshore, and Wheelie on the roads again.

Both the runners and bikers had a couple of challenges this morning.  Circle K took a flat tire in the wrong neighborhood.  Fortunately, the F3 racing team had parts and pump to get him repaired and moving again.  After running the mile of death down Dabney, a car at Wawa came close to Phonics.  Even in a well lit area, if a driver isn’t looking for a runner, they aren’t going to see them.

Speaking of mile of death, Dabney lived up to expectations with potholes and a constant caravan of cement and beer trucks.  Colbeer!

Finally, the name of the backblast.  There was a strong and pleasant smell of cupcakes or some other Hostess product on a stretch of Dabney.  Then of course we had Krispy Kreme as we came up Staples Mill.  Labrat talked me out of grabbing a few dozen for the Pax on the return to the AO.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • Back in Black

A sweet sixteen arose today for some crisp running weather and hopefully faster speeds.  We did Reverse Carillon routes of the 4, 5, and 6 variety with a little “catch me if you can” at the end down Grove.

    Marv took us out.

    NMS:

The is YHC’s home stretch to close out the year’s Q of RAMM (for the most part).  Come back with a classic route, the Reverse Carillon, and a classic theme song, Back in Black.  Besides, YHC was wearing all black and dark grey today so the title is appropriate there as well.  Note to self: Get a reflective vest or light.  As Labrat said, “You must not like your family running in all black and no light.”  Point taken.

    Perfect weather for a run.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • I love the smell of bacon in the morning. Smells like victory….

A cool ten rose to claim victory over the Devil’s Pitchfork.  4,5, and 6 mile options were taken with modification.

    Dutch took us out.

    NMS:

YHC wasn’t as prepared today as hoped.  New prototype route still on the drawing board, woke before 4am thinking I had slept through the run, and left my watch at home.  All small challenges considering the big picture.  Today we did modified routes of the Devil’s Pitchfork which is a great set of hill workouts.  It was extremely dark out there even with the headlights.  TYA even began running up someone’s driveway taking it for his turn.

Pax continue to impress.  Saab had his speed today and Lugnut finished strong.

The cafeteria team at the Commons was cranking out the early morning bacon.  A fragrance so strong and powerful, it represented goodness and all the possibilities of the coming day.

Also of note, Saab’s watch is accurate but a day ahead.  Is this some training strategy of the elite runners?  Perhaps a means to never show up a day late?  Wishful thinking for the upcoming weekend?  Or perhaps just neglect of one’s timepiece?

Sippy Cup demonstrates another elite runner secret by jogging backwards after his run.  It reminds me of Cameron from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.  Sippy, I don’t think it will take those miles off your legs like they attempted on the Ferarri in the movie.

    Announcements:

    • Wednesday hill run is not in its usual place or time this week.  5pm departure from Pump House Park for trail runs.

I came.  No one else was there.  I ran.

  • Friday the 13th – Death by Main

Lockjaw’s 11 showed for the crisp fall running weather and left with so much more.

    • East on Grove, left on Lafayette to Monument.
    • East on Monument to desired street for turn
      • 4 miles – Boulevard
      • 5 miles – Strawberry
      • 6 miles – Lombardy
    • Take your street south to Main (or Ellwood) and head west to Thompson.
    • Thompson to Grove and back the to VSF

    YHC took us out.

Main is a one-way west bound street which means runners always have cars at their backs.  This becomes a harrowing situation for about a mile or so.  Per Lab Rat’s advice, we called an audible and cut over to Cary St for our parallel return route.  Even that route was not without danger as a van hopped the curb and parked in front of us to make deliveries.

    Beware Friday the 13th.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • Paradise

A Mighty 12 came out for a wet Hoedown and to see the AO that last week’s inaugural seventeen have been talking about.

It started out in the bus loop with COP:

    • Invisible Jump Rope (bringing a little Punisher to Hoedown)
    • Copperhead Squats
    • Slow Don Quixotes
    • Russian Soldiers

Mosey down Lindsay Drive to Lindsay Court all the way down the hill to the end.  Time for some Lindsays.  Start with 30 merkins and 10 Box Cutters flipping positions and increasing/decreasing count by five til you are at 10 and 30.

Partner up for Catch Me If You Can.  Partner 1 runs up the hill backwards while partner 2 does three burpees and runs to their partner.  Swap roles and repeat until you reach the stop sign.

Cross the road and bear crawl up the hill.  Mosey to the back play ground for modified 4 Corners.  It’s modified in that three of the stations are in a row and a fourth across the track.  At the end of the day, 4 stations and a lap around the track.

    • Station 1 – Derkins with legs suspended by swings
    • Station 2 – Suspend yourself from the monkey bars and leg lifts
    • Station 3 – Dips off the benches
    • Station 4- Box Jumps

20 of each exercise and repeato 3 times.

Finish up with 11s – WWII, run across the field, Scorpions

Mosey Back to SF.  Labrat took us out.

    NMS:

After last week’s total darkness, we had more ambient light even with the clouds and rain.  Headlights aided us in our workout trek this morning.  Saab called the Lindsays “Lazy Lindsays” since we didn’t run between exercises.  Commentary was quickly replaced by grunting and gyrations in the street as the full effect of the Lindsay was experienced.  YHC chose that spot in proximity to a potential EH mark.  Nothing says come out and play like twelve guys in your street working out.

For those who came for the Lockjaw history lesson, as you were running backwards up the road there was a place of significance to your right.  There is an 1830s farmhouse owned by Dr. Patterson named Paradise.  This is where Tuckhoe Elementary held their first classes in the basement prior to the construction of the current school.  Besides being a local doctor, he was a captain of the tobacco industry founding the Lucky Strike brand among others.  As you can probably deduce, Patterson Avenue is named after him since it went through his land.

Finally, the box jumps and derkins were a special challenge.  Derkins off of a moving swing is a good core exercise as well.  The box jumps were on a four cornered spring device.  When the Pax hit is just right it would catapult the Pax on the opposing side like a trampoline.  Timing is everything.

    Announcements:

    • For those driving to Hoedown, do not park in the row of spaces adjacent to the bus loop.  Early arriving teachers prefer these spots.  Let’s keep the peace in our new AO.
    •   Upchuck is starting up a double dog dare monthly workout on October 21.  Come for Dogpile and stay for a second hour.  This month it coincides with Puppy Pile, but ongoing it may not.
    • Puppy Pile on October 21 @ 7am.  Kid friendly workout at the Carillon.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • Timberwolf Beast

A lucky 13 warriors came to deliver today.

COP – Arm Circles, SSH, Imperial Walkers, Helicopters

Mosey through the darkness to the football field.  Tatu went down somewhere in the shadows in perhaps a hole or a ditch.

    Line up for the Beast!

    • Burpees
    • WW II
    • Copperhead Squats
    • Freddie Mercuries
    • Burpees
    • Carolina Drydocks

Three burpees on your own taking us to 75.

In honor of Hugh Hefner, circle up for the Honeymoon Suite – Diamond Merkins, APDs, Monkey Humpers, Pickle Pounders.

Pax preferred a return mosey across the tennis courts rather than in the shadows.  Fear of falling or Wilson’s phobia?  Head to the back corner of the school for Triple Check: BTTW, flutter kicks, run to the far end of the basketball court and back.

Back to the shovel flag for hot potato Mary – Dealer’s Choice.  We did about seven exercises (some requiring official F3 names) and closed with superman.

    Oyster took us out.

    NMS:

Timberwolf has so much to offer, but one cannot help but begin with that football field.  Perfect for a beast.  No lighting required either.  Early mumble chatter was promptly extinguished with the burpees kicking off the beast.

During the honeymoon suite, Wilson’s unresolved stomach issues cleared everyone around him, casting the circle into a crescent.  Perhaps this is how he rolls in his personal honeymoon suite and he felt at home (#GodHelpWilson’sWife).  As we moved on to the triple check it became clear that this was not a one time occurrence.   The running portion was welcome relief from the stench.  Wilson needs help.

    Announcements:

    • Order your breakfast for Saturday in advance or face the wrath of Hardywood.
    • New AO launch on Monday – Hoedown @ Tuckahoe Elementary School.  It’s going to be super!

    ABT,
