  • The Q lived up to his name

9 men including 1 FNG showed up to a cool(er) Saturday morning to kickstart the weekend.

YHC hadn’t Q’d DaPile before, and in his excitement skipped COP entirely, sorry about that guys.

Started off in the field across from the Kings Charter Clubhouse with 4 corners. Run or lunge between corners, 15 reps each exercise, they were merkins, Helix squats, LBC’s and SSH. Mosey to the tennis courts for a Dora but with 3 people per team (triple check Dora?), timer does suicides across the 3 tennis courts, others work on 100 LBC’s, 200 invisible jump ropes, and 300 shoulder taps.

Mosey to the playground area for a double dose of triple checks. First dose, timer runs to touch 3 trees, can’t touch the same tree twice, other 2 do either skull crushers or hold plank. Second dose, timer bear crawls up the hill and across parking lot to the lamp post, other 2 do either jerkins or dips.

Mosey back to the field for 11’s, double count toe taps and boxcutters, then 5 minutes of stretching, numberama, namerama, YHC took us out.

    NMS

Halfway through 4 corners YHC realized he had skipped COP–oh well, too late, just keep moving. Kudos to Mongoose (FNG) for pushing through the workout, as Helix reminded us near the end, Hardywood is fond of saying “there’s always something left in the tank fellas!” YHC realized he had not planned enough when the PAX cruised through half of the planned workout in 20 minutes, hence the second dose of triple check. Great to lead as always, and welcome to Mongoose (Rob Bedford)! Hope to see you again very soon. It was great for YHC to see Wild Thing and Rounders again, and to meet Macho, as well as catching up with Corn Beef and Hash afterwards at The Local Cup.

As usual, I have No Idea what I’m doing…

  • Washington Generals Tryouts…

When I first started posting for workouts I thought guys didn’t like it unless they were beat down to the point they could barely walk but now I realize that’s not what it’s about. It’s about getting up in the Gloom with your brothers, just being active, and having fun. It’s just as much about the fellowship as it is the fitness so I thought I would try to do something a little different from my VQ, which took me a few days to recover from. How about some basketball and baseball! Here’s how things went down.

    Mosey to the Basketball courts

    Warmarama

SSH, Helicopters, Don Quixotes, Cherry pickers Ukrainian soldiers, Merkins, WW2’s. 10 of each exercise in cadence.

    Basketball

The runner had to score 10 points, alternating baskets after each bucket. While he is running up and down the court, the rest of the Pax is doing an exercise of the runners choosing. Exercises included squats, hand release merkins, burpees, side straddle hops, WW2, Ukrainian soldiers, arm circles, and everybody’s favorite, SCORPION KICKS. Hardywood got creative with the 2 part exercise. American hammers and a merkin each time he scored a point.

    Mosey to the Baseball field

    Baseball

One Pax gets up to bat while the rest is in the outfield. The hitter chooses the exercise for the rest of the Pax to do and hits the ball off a tee. While the hitter is running the bases, the rest of the pax is in the outfield exercising. Exercises included burpees, heels to heaven, Suzanne Somers, mountain climbers, squat jumps, ball dippers, and others

    Triple Check

In groups of 3, the runner runs up a hill and around the parking lot while other pax are performing dip and squats. Pax alternated until 3 rounds were completed.

Mosey BTTF for a couple minutes of Mary with 30 WW2s and 30 LBCs OYO

    • Namerama
    • Announcerama
    • YHC took the PAX out in Prayer

While playing basketball, I believe it was Hardywood who said we look like we should play for the Washington Generals, the team that is winless and that always gets obliterated by the Harlem Globetrotters! Husky and Half Pipe did better at making baskets than any of the other Pax. Snuff and Rosie showed off their center field skills during baseball by bare handing a couple of fly balls. The mumble chatter was great today, lots of fun had. Thanks for letting me lead.

    House Party

    MOLESKIN

A couple of prolific home run hitters grabbed the Q, not wanting to risk Bacon Bits dropping some awful block routine again.  The heat and humidity made life plenty awful, nonetheless.  Big Macshake was a little extra with the time, but no worries Jose Hutton was happy to hit the walk-off and steal the glory.  Heart rates were going crazy coming up the hill.  YHC won’t attest to the cleanliness of his fellow Bash Bro’s sample, but no PEDs or bacne for this guy.  Until next time, swing a big stick and swing it hard.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

Prayers for Gypsy’s Uncle who passed and family

Prayers for Flatline’s friend diagnosed and quickly passed of Cancer

Prayers for Flatline as he awaits the next phase of his Army orders

Prayers for Lab Rat to get good test results

  • Early Bird Special

What a great day for a run! The 530 crew were few in numbers, but mighty in spirit with most Pax choosing the 500 option. Plenty of two wheeled Pax out today as well.

    The Route

West on Grove and a right on Bunting. As one progresses North, dogleg to the right and the road transitions to Chantilly and Maywill. Take a right on Westmoreland and return to the AO. For extra mileage add the left on Jacque, right on Dabney/Malvern to Grove.

    Moleskin

One of the best parts of running from this AO is the conversation one has with members of one’s pace group. Its always genuine and appreciated. We had a nice tour of the new luxury condos off of Maywill and a stroll down memory lane around the original Costco and Circuit City locations.

    TYA took us out.

    Announcements

See TYA for opportunities to road trip west and be a part of the Bridge experience. Its a monthly opportunity to keep on your calendar. Also, the Wednesday hill run will be resurrected 7/27. Interested? Meet at the top of Hillcrest be 5-530 pm and bring your lowest gear to grind out those hills.

    Be great today!

  • Omar Says No to a Nickname

One overweight dude ran 5. One definitely not overweight dude did curls using large power tools in the parking lot. Temps were 70 and sunny. According to the PAX who appointed himself as the hotel security guard, the following may have happened:

Running route: Peters, left on 36th, north to mall, past the pop-up, pay-to-work-out place. Turn around at Broward Blvd. Return via same route.

Workout: curls. At least 65 minutes of equipment curls. YHC saw Omar doing this at 4:55 a.m. and can verify he was still doing it at 6:00.

Number, name, Omar took us out with the following: “What is there to complain about? I’m above ground. That’s ok for me. Complaining doesn’t fix anything.”

NMS: Omar was doing equipment curls this morning when YHC hit the parking lot to stretch just prior to 5 a.m. Blower in the right hand, and some type of mechanical digging tool in the left while walking the parking lot. YHC checked the blower. ~20 pounds. Apparently, there have been car break ins, so Omar has appointed himself as the overnight security guard once his normal work was done. YHC did about 10 minutes of stretching, then the run. When YHC came back about 50 minutes later, Omar was still doing curls walking in the parking lot.

He said no thanks to a nickname, so we’re going with Omar as his nickname. First, if you know the reference to Omar from The Wire, this a perfect. Omar is an upstanding dude from Jamaica. I doubt he’s ever broken a rule in his life. And, I don’t believe he has seen even one episode of The Wire.

    UpChuck spits the bit.

  • The WOD is not Hard Enough

6 strong gathered in the gloom of Bettie Weaver Elementary to honor a fallen F3 brother. Nervous mumblechatter and a just a touch of humidity filled the air as we all knew what was to come. Here is a brief summary for your viewing pleasure.

Mosey to the basketball court for warmarama: Arm Circles, Helicopters, Ukranian Soldiers, Dead Man Hang, Hip Flexor Stretches, Wilson/Fudd’s wife, High knees, Butt Kicks, Karaoke x 2, Shoulder Stretches.

    The Workout:

    5 rounds of the following:
    10 pull ups, 20 V sit-ups, 30 Merkins, 40 yd Broad Jump Burpees, 50 yd sprint, 1/2 mile run.

Back to the flag for Numbers, Names, Announcements, etc.

    Boberry took us out.

Final thoughts: That was a tough one! I think we all finished 4 full rounds, with Doozy getting further into the 5th. Towards the end of the workout, Rosie noted that our broad jump burpees were actually about 55 meters. That’s just how we roll down here South of the James. Of course, YHC may have compensated with an embarrassingly slow final sprint. Prayers for Treehugger, the F3 Lehigh Valley member who recently lost his life. Also for Florence, who had to bail at the last minute due to COVID in the house.

Great work fellas! Enjoy the weekend

  • RTT for BRR

10 of the best from the West End and a fast visitor from Raleigh tried to not get lost in a 4-5 mile run that included ~1.5 miles of Rain Tree Trails (RTT). Lots of hills and different terrain hopefully was good BRR prep for a few of us. YHC is the only one who had experienced the trails before and noticed that the roots got bigger in the dark. The team only had one fall and some got lost after the trail ended but everyone made it back safely. The route went something like this:

Pump South to Falconbridge to Raintree South to the Raintree club.

Take the trail on the LEFT of the Raintree complex (some learned that going to the right of the complex is not possible) and then take the lake trail counterclockwise around the lake. Admire the lake and wildlife. 3/4 the way around the lake, take the trail on the right.

This trail takes you to Rounding Run which takes you back to Falconbridge. Go right on Falconbridge and quickly look for the trail entrance on the left.

Take the trail for a mile, avoid the roots and rocks, crossing the stream while avoiding the trolls living under the bridges. Trail ends at Rocky Point Parkway and find your way back to Ridgefield (done a few different ways).

Take Ridgefield down past Pump and come back on Old Prescott.

Announcements: BRR in Sept (need more runners), new AO in Manchester starting Saturday mornings at 7:30 with the Healing Place (see Offshore for more info), Sin N Sip 9/24 (see Gomer for more info). Check Slack for other stuff.

Prayers for Lab Rat and Gomer’s sister-in-law and family.

Good to have El Chapo from Raleigh join us the past couple of days. Always a privilege to Q and glad I did not get anyone too lost.

  • Bull Durham

Only 2 Gloom warriors showed to join YHC in the latest edition of the Timberwolf beatdown. According to the late arriving garbage truck driver, this is what went down.

COP- 20 each SSH, LBC; 10 Each DQ’s, Jazzercise, Helicopters, Imperial Walkers,/, Coper head squat, Dead man hang, Merkins, Flutters, Dollies.

    The thang:

A proper Horseshoe. Several weeks back I called for one and did not execute. So I was back today to set things right. Horseshoe was on the trail beside the track (Big Hill). Working our way up adding one at a time, picking up the next exercise on each side. Up with 5 Drydocks, 10 WWII’s, 15 jump squats, 20 Merkins, 25 LBC’s, 30 Lunges, 35 Plank jacks. Back down dropping an exercise each run. Time for a lap with various runs thrown in Mosey BTTF.

    Announcements: See Slack

Prayer Requests: I pray for Dozey and questions from Posey on their screening of Bull Durham the night prior.

YHC took us out in prayer.

Thanks Dozey, Posey for not making it a solo workout.

    Make Today Awesome!
