  • The Night We Saw Them All 2.0

What a night!! A grand total of 39 hard charging dudes, or crazy MFers, depending on who you ask, saddled up for some or all of the Century 2.0. 3 teams of varying regionalities filled their vans up with supplies before 6pm on Friday night. Don Draper rolled in with a brand new Mercedes Sprinter van that inspired a new team name, Team Diesel. Van 4 carrying Team Boberry and the New Day (BND) rolled in hot with the crisp sounds of Yacht Rock as the instructions were given and the first runners, Focker, Gecko, Wet Bandit, and Heist, were sent off into the West End heat.

Team Westhoe had the advantage of home turf for the first stretch with every other team getting lost somewhere along one of the routes. The mood was set early when Purple Rain, FNG Jason, and Faceplant all ruck/ran the majority of leg #2. After Buddy pushed ahead of him on leg #4- Faceplant provided his team updates along his journey in the Taint. Charging into the depths of the West End, Chaplain found a way to add mileage to his route, combo that with a migraine and he had to take an early leave. A week of sleepless nights from Broadway did him and and left Boberry heading to DaVille alone in his van. Heist thought he might cruise into the pickleball courts at Pouncey Tract Park with an easy 2nd place finish but the vision of his tron ahead kept YHC focused on an extra push to put Team Diesel into 2nd place in the West End.

After grabbing Woodsman for Team BND it was off to DaVille for a 3 leg sprint led by Team Alamo aka team Silent but Deadly. Beat It (err Brownie?) was the lone Davillian to come support the effort, after waking him up from his car he was able to hang out and watch the festivities as the other teams scrambled to provide support for Boberry and his crew.

Next up – Team Challenges. Beaver, Choo Choo, and Yukon Cornelius met us at the Lumberyard for Team Challenge #1. Team Tug of War with a fire hose – Team Westhoe left their strength at home and, despite being the only team with gloves, failed to win a match while Team SBD took the round robin and got their first choice of exercises. Team BND won round 1 but fell in the championship, even with the help of the locals. Team Diesel and Westhoe had an epic back and forth battle for 3rd that felt like hours but was likely closer to 30 seconds with Team Diesel prevailing. A quick half mile out and back and we were on our way to the next challenge.

An open bathroom was a popular sight at Bermuda where BND picked up Mudslide. Heist had a map with 9, or was it 10, spots for team selfies, with a team total of 100 pullups at the final spot. Not sure how to judge who won this one besides maybe best selfie? The teams all agreed to a quick stop at Rock N Roll since that was the only other AO left off the route – start with some savasana, some quick Mary, and a group photo under the security camera before heading out.

The final legs began at Green Mile. After the runners took off the teams enjoyed some easy going times in the parking lot until an unnamed PAX cleared the parking lot with a stink like he was in an enclosed van. On the way to the clean bathrooms of the Alamo, Team Diesel spotted a bonking Focker a few miles in. A quick support stop for some GU, water, and salt and he was back to normal. The next couple legs featured a battle between Westhoe and SBD while Diesel and BND took on the legs together with Rosetta running back to back legs. All was well until team Westhoe brought in fresh legs and a City Ringer as a pacer. Marv and Sippy Cup overtook The Duke and watched him make a wrong turn. Either way, at that point the lead was Westhoe’s to lose, not even Offshore running a leg for team BND was able to catch them on the way to Dogpile. 23 men stuck around for the final COT where FNG Jason was not named – Colgate, 4 out of 5, Prentist, Root Canal, Early Bird, and other names are up for grabs – until he posts again.

Phenomenal work and a big Tclap thank you to the organizers – Routemaster – EF Hutton; Idea man – Don Draper; Challenge coordinator – Heist; Team Captains – Boberry and Swoop; Lumberyard Tug-o-war Refs and Teammates – Beaver, Choo Choo, Yukon. Could not have done it without support from everyone. Heist kept noting how different this was from last year’s CSAUP a year ago this weekend, some of that night is fuzzy but I recall it included some yelling, rain, dirty water, rucks, rain, logs, trails, sandbags yelling, carrying, dragging, and more rain. No rain, no logs, and only fun yelling this time around.

The Winner – well that is up for debate. Westhoe and Alamo/SBD each won 2 sections. The 5th – Bermuda may be decided by best team selfie – biceps vs binder. Controversy will swirl for years with accusations of the use of a City Pacer, fresh legs never touching a van, lending of runners to other teams, and flatulent sabotage until the next Century. One thing is certain, no one loses when the HIMs of F3 get together to solidify bonds in the shared suffering of a CSAUP.

Way to go men! Until next time, see you in the gloom.

  • 10 years of superlatives – Awards & Fundraising

In this post, we memorialize our fundraising and 10 year award winners.

Futon Q – Fundraising for the event and Team Brightside

First of all, I just want to personally thank each and every one of you for being out here today to support not only the 10th anniversary of F3 in Richmond, but to support Team Brightside and in raising awareness for pediatric cancer. Today would not have happened if it weren’t for the OGs that brought F3 to Richmond. Speaking on behalf of the PAX, we can’t thank you enough for starting and growing this brotherhood. The fellowship portion of this morning also wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the companies and people that so graciously provided in kind donations to all of you. I just wanted to say a huge thank you to:

    • Wawa for donating the soft pretzels
    • Wegmans for donating the energy bars, muffins, scones and apples
    • Libby Market for donating the bananas
    • Honeymoon and Niagra for donating the waters
    • Athletic Brewing Company for donating the non alcoholic beers
    • Boberry and Honey Baked Ham for donating the tea and lemonade
    • Gypsy and Ataraxia Farms for donating the gatorades
    • Upchuck and Shakedown for buying the coffee

September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, so what better way to show our fellowship than coming together to raise money for this great cause. Before announcing our total that F3 RVA has collected for Team Brightside, there are a few individuals/companies that I wanted to recognize that went above and beyond to help push this number so high. We had quite a few companies provide us with gift cards to help with these fundraising efforts:

    1. First off, for donating $6,492.46 from 155 kids in Midlothian, VA who in exchange received back to school pictures. Thanks to Swoop’s M – Jennifer Gavin with Jennifer Gavin Photography, Jennifer is receiving a gift package that was donated by Cooper’s Hawk Winery including a mega bottle of house red wine, a 3 month wine club subscription and a wine tasting for two.
    1. For headlocking his company into matching our first $10,000 raised, a big thanks to Rudy and Davis Infrastructure. Rudy is receiving a $50 gift card to Stumpy’s Hatchet House for Ax Throwing that was donated by Pele at Stumpy’s Hatchet House
    1. For headlocking his company into a one month drive for raising money for Team Brightside as well as a company match, a big thanks to State Farm and Clover Creek Solar for bringing in $8,845. State Farm is also receiving a $50 gift card to Stumpy’s Hatchet House for Ax Throwing that was donated by Pele and Stumpy’s Hatchet House.
    1. The following HIMs reached deep in the pockets and donated $500 each. A big thanks to Hermes, Gomer Pyle and Blacktop. Each of them will be receiving a $25 gift card that was donated by Capital Ale House.
    1. The following HIMs also dug not quite as deep, but decently deep in the pockets and donated $300 each. A big thanks to Warby, Upchuck and Rosie. Each of them will be receiving a $25 gift card that was donated by Jimmy Johns.
    1. Shout out to Wildcat, Swoop and Yeehaw starting their Team Brightside fundraisers for a triathlon they are competing in at Kiawah Island in the next month or 2.
    1. Finally, I just wanted to recognize the daycare that Yeehaw and I (as well some other PAX members I believe) use for childcare. They were looking for a “local” non profit to use for their Spring Fling and after I presented what we were doing, they graciously agreed to use Team Brightside as their charity of choice. A big thanks to Primrose of Midlothian Village for raising $4,425 from their Spring Fling back in April.

Again, thanks to all for your donations and spreading the word to truly make a huge impact for pediatric cancer research and development through Team Brightside. We set a goal back in March to raise $10,000 for the 10 year anniversary and I am excited to share that we collectively raised $54,073.41!

Over the last 10 years hundreds of men have posted for a workout.  Few have had the longevity and impact that the following men have had on F3 RVA.  I now introduce to you the inaugural F3 RVA Corporate Legends Class of 2024.  These names will not likely be a surprise as they are the standard.

First up, is a guy who’s always the first to know when it’s raining, but more importantly he’s the magician behind all of F3 RVA’s IT needs.  Need a new alias, can’t find the Q sheet, can’t post a backblast?  You know who to call.  When he’s not logging miles at Spider Run, or trying a new IPA, he’s pissing excellence as the god of #Big Data.  The one and only Splinter

Next up, is a guy whose name is synonymous with his frequent state of being.  When not on the brokedick brigade, you will most often find him at Spider Run, RAMM, WDog, 45MOM, or DogPile, perhaps mid-workout making a pitstop at Starbucks.  He’s one of our founders, our first Nant’an, and the connection to the mothership that got this thing started.  The godfather himself, Bleeder.

Next up, is a guy who’s accomplished more than many of us will ever dream.  He’s tough as nails and has a mouth to match.  Trust me you have to be tough when you have a face like his.  His affinity for Boston, Shakira, and Everything Bagels is matched only by his love for the men of F3 RVA, BRR, and wearing women’s clothes.  Original thanksgiving denier, the Aggressor himself, TYA.

Lastly, the guy who really needs no introduction.  Securer of AOs, your #1 fight club draft pick, and the sole member of the 2000 posts club.  After nearly 300 Qs and backblasts he still can’t spell Mosey for shit.  Steady is the drip that wears the rock away, the GOAT, Swirly.

NMS – Great work for the last 10 years gents. Lets keep it growing!

    Get some!

  • 10 Years in the Books!

Over 100 men of F3RVA descended on Dogpile to celebrate 10 years of F3 in Richmond. After milling around the flags reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones, Gomer Pyle took the reins and kicked us off with 1 Burpee for each year.

Mosey (Mossy?) down the road and across the field to the Amphitheater for the disclaimer and introduction of our COP Special Guest. OBT takes over to lead a few exercises but more importantly give a few words about starting F3 in Richmond and the impact it can and has had on all of us. OBT had to leave early to watch what I assume was a basketball game at UNC with a final score of JMU 70 UNC 50?!? Gomer then added some always popular 8- count Shazams and some other stuff to the warm up.

Next we split the group into 7 completely equal groups with guys from the original or early on taking their PAX on an adventure. Lockjaw, Bleeder, TYA, Doner Kebab, Johnsonville, Swirly, and Oyster each did their own thing.

Rumors abound over what each group did. Lockjaw spent some time at the Rusty Cage before touching some trees. Bleeder touched some trees in the circle while TYA took over the field. DK explored old hills near VITA and Oyster ran everywhere for a long time.

Back in the Amphitheater Gomer led a random assortment while waiting for all the PAX to come in. Little did the PAX know that along with Gomer’s words of wisdom wrapping up the morning he was passing off the F3RVA Nantan role to YHC.

I am incredibly humbled and appreciative of the support from the PAX for my new role with F3RVA. We have been given an amazing opportunity to be part of F3 and it is ours to give away but we have to put in the work. We all know there are others around Richmond that will benefit from all aspects of F3 from the fitness to the fellowship to support and encouragement of other men. It will take effort to continue to “Plant, Grow, and Serve” but together we can make some big things happen.

2nd F was next level with food and drinks supplied by the PAX, including Futon and Upchuck. Awards followed coordinated by Heist and EF Hutton. A separate backblast will detail the winners. Many pictures and videos on Slack from Kubota and Bone Thugs.

Incredible morning gents, thank you all for making it special. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead.

    Everything is coming up Rosie!

  • 10K for 10 years

4 took the call to put in a Kilometer for each year of RVA’s birthday and prerun 6.2 miles before main event.

Great pace kept us at a conversational with and a little push to make it back in time. Many topics covered today from Toddler’s eating to Splinter’s long legs. But as always on a run, the conversation is a mobile COT. So what is shared amongst the pax remains with pax. You have to show to know.

    Happy Birthday RVA!!

Looking forward to the next 10 years.

  • Blame Splinter

    Blame Splinter

On my 3rd year anniversary, I took the start to Splinter’s Q from Labor Day 2021 and gave these 55 great men and 2.0s the same experience.  We also had one FNG today (Mountie) and hopefully he makes it back like I did.

We first moseyed to the back playground lot to start the morning.  After some poor disclaimers and then with the Q help of Heist and Tater, we warmed up with something like the following: 20 SSH in Cadence and then one Burpee OYO, 10 Imperial Walkers in Cadence and two Burpees OYO and continued all the way to ten Burpees OYO with 10 Ukrainian Solders and three Burpees, 10 Copperhead Squats and four Burpees, 10 Merkins and five Burpees, 15 Arm Circles and six Burpees, 25 LBC and seven Burpees, 10 WWII and eight Burpees,10 Freddies and nine Burpees and Dead Man Hang and ten Burpees.

Many were ready for the Q to rotate but instead we partnered up and did a DORA of 100 HRM, 200 Squats and 300 LBCs, running the short length of the playground lot.  This was the end of the “Blame Splinter” section.

After that we broke up into 3 groups.  Tater took his group to a fun hill on the West side of the school with an Ab focused workout.  Started with 25 Crunchy Frogs, 25 Freddie Mercury, 25 Mercury Freddies and 25 WWII.  Then did 7s of Get Up and Squats using the hill.  They finished with 25 side crunches each side, 20 V ups, 25 American Hammers and some stretching.

Heist stayed at the playground lot.  They started with 11s using the hill next to the playground with Squats and WW2 with Bear Crawls up the hill and jogging down.  Then he found the pullup bars and benches and did a Triple check of Pullups, Dips and Timer fan to the middle of the soccer field and back.  They finished off with 4 corners prostitute style with 10 ww2, 20 merkins, 30 squats and 40 SSH.

My lucky group went to the bus loop.  We started with a triple check of jump squats, merkins and the timer running to the end of the school and back.  When then did 4 corners around the school.  Started with 20 Flutters and then Bernie’d to the end of the school.  There we did 20 WII and then ran to the top of the hill at the other end of the school.  Here we did 20 Crunchy Frogs and then did some more when the walkers arrived.  Forgetting to get my phone from my car, we ran back to my car (to the joy and confusion of many) and then ran to the last corner of the school.  We took 3 trips up the hill (same hill used by Heist) via Bear Crawl and Crawl Bear back then ran or bear crawled the fourth time to be back on the playground lot.

We joined in with Heists Four Corners for the 40 SSH, Tater’s group came flying in and soon we were all back together for some Mary.  We did some combination of American Hammers, LBCs, WWI, Flutters and who knows what else.  Numerama and Names, then I almost skipped Announcements, and Attila took us out.

FNG Mountie used to work with Gomer and they reconnected recently.  He is from Canada (as you may guess) and lives nearby at West Broad Village.  Welcome Mountie!

It was an honor to lead this morning.  Big thanks to Gomer for the invitation 3 years ago and to Splinter for unsuccessfully trying to kill me that day.  F3 has been a blessing mainly because I have been able to meet and get to know many of you.  Coffeteria today was great as always.

What a fantastic way to christen The Deep which will be at Nuckols Farm every Monday at 5:30AM. Please help us get this rolling and join in over the next month.  Next week we will be two Nuckols at the Deep.

F3 RVA Ten Year Anniversary celebration starts the evening of the 20th social with the 21st having a Convergence, Awards and a Family BBQ.  See Slack for all the details and signups.  Also, see Bodo’s Slack post on a 5K-The Lara Teague Curry Memorial.

Have a great rest of your long weekend.

  • F3RVA 10-Year Anniversary

    F3RVA 10-Year Anniversary

Gentlemen of F3RVA – you have been hearing announcements, you’ve seen the T-shirt orders, and heard bits and pieces about the 10-year F3RVA anniversary. F3 was started in Richmond 10 years ago with what F3 Nation referred to as a ‘Leap’. They found a few local contacts to get something started and built it out with Charlotte PAX coming up for a Q-school and preliminary workouts before passing it off to the locals on 9/20/2014. Thanks to Big Data (ahem, Splinter), you can read all that happened that day here: https://backblasts.f3rva.org/2014/09/20/old-dominion-welcome-to-f3-nation/ I am sure you will recognize a couple names in the PAX list. After that inaugural beatdown, the PAX from RVA took off and have helped bring F3 to all of us in Richmond, plus assistance in launching Hampton Roads and Charlottesville.

Events for the weekend are below:

    • Friday 9/20 – Weekend Kickoff Happy Hour – 5pm at Casa de Snuff in Bon Air – 2032 Buford Road – 5:00-7:00pm – Park at BACA or St. Michaels
    • Saturday 9/21 – Workouts at Dogpile
      • 5am tentative Early/Premature Beatdown/Run/Smokefest – Big Rig will be leading this – don’t miss a chance to get the day started right
      • 6am – Pre-Run and Ruck options
      • 7am – Main Event – 10-year Anniversary Beatdown – Special Guest OG Qs
      • 8am – Stick around for post workout refreshments
      • 8am – Team Brightside Fundraising and F3RVA awards
    • Saturday 9/21 – Family Cookout – Huguenot Park at 1:30pm – all PAX and families invited

This is a special event, we have all been fortunate to have the F3 community in our lives so let’s use that weekend to celebrate and energize us to keep giving it away. We want to get as many guys out as we can so start headlocking now – reach out to any guys that may not be on Slack or don’t post very often, they won’t want to miss this.
More info to come on details. Reach out to me or Gomer if you have any questions.

Most importantly – Put 9/21 at 7am on your calendar and someone else’s! Let’s GO!

NMS:  As always brothers, it is one of my deepest honors to be a part of this fine organization and have the opportunity to lead. We truly embody FREEDOM – for ourselves, our brotherhood, our communities, our country, and in our faith. Loved seeing so many PAX from all over RVA, and welcome NIGHTSTAND (Hayden Mulchin) – so nicknamed as he spends a lot of time as a caretaker for his elderly veteran grandfather. Looking back it was cool to see that each team won an event! Great effort everyone!!! Brothers, what we have in F3, truly EVERY man needs in his life, whether he knows it now or not. Be FEARLESS in your invitation to join you in F3, and together we will reach every community in RVA. Happy Independence Day brothers! Yours AYE! ~DTH
