  • Is this what May is like in Seattle?

11 dudes showed up to the slightly rainy confines of Short Pump Middle north to experience a beat down. It was a good surprise to see Roger Roger make the trip out west (even for part of the time) and for Gyspy and Homer to come back. I am happy the rain stopped last night so I didn’t have to come up with a bus loop only workout. The hour went something like this:

COP: DQs, CPs, HRMs, helicopters, FMs – Oh here comes Attila.

Mosey the long way to Stryker Park. Ascending exercises: 10 burpees, add 20 WWIIs the second set (continue the burpees), add 30 jump squats, 40 2 count mountain climbers and last set adds 50 SSHs. The PAX enjoyed the 50 total burpees. Mosey to the pavilion by the pickelball court (by the way I played pickleball for the first time last Sunday – quite fun).

Start with 10 derkins and 15 dips, then 15 and 20 and then 20 and 25. Mosey to chin up bars.

2 PAX does 5 chin ups with the other now 8 PAX do elbow plank. Rinse and repeat.

Long mosey to curb in front of Short Pump Middle. Curb crawl to 3 down to 1. Lunge to bus loop pillars.

Triple check with pole smokers, diamond merkins and a run around the triangle. Mosey to home base.

We went with some requests at the home base wall including donkey kicks, balls to the wall, chicken peckers, and dirty hookups. Finished with AHs, plank jacks, MCs and DQs.

Announcements: lunch this Tuesday 5/10 at Joey’s hot dogs in Innsbrook (this is a fancy group). Tuckahoe Takeover starts tomorrow. Convergence on Memorial Day at Tredegar Iron Works downtown, June 4 Blood Drive and June 4 workout in Charlottesville. See Pigskin for details on the blood drive and Vinny for details on the Charlottesville workout.

Prayers for Gypsy’s upcoming surgery and for Lighthouse’s family in the Ukraine. Have a great weekend!

NMS – Fun to be back out at GridIron. On the drive over from Dogpile, YHC realized that there are some other great Qs out there that have not signed up and decided on a hot potato.  Thanks to the fellow Qs for jumping in. White Deer reminds us that while the Q is in charge he is also on a stage with a spotlight.

Coffeeteria makes YHC seem that some might be interested in a military history / movie watch night where we can go in knowing what we are talking about and avoid building up to a downer.  Bottom line: War sucks – the aftermath sucks too. When nations policy goals conflict and diplomacy fails, war is the outcome.  No soldier really wants it, and some end up being good at it…  regardless, the goal of my military brethren is to make war violent at the precise point of most impact, and therefore quick so that more of the brethren can go back home.  We are lucky here that so few of us have needed to be involved – its not like that around the world. This is made possible and we are kept safe by rough men and women “on the borders” that you may never know. If interested, YHC would be happy to get some other veterans together to share what those brave souls go through with those that want to know.

  • Lines on Football field

Gridiron had 9 participants including Polly (FNG last week). Unfortunately, Homer was a little late and missed out on some burpees. You snooze, you lose. I was pleased to note that the football field was lined off.  That way, we knew where midfield was. No guessing!

It’s always great to be out here. I had to miss coffee after the workout but I needed to help out with our grandson. His parents are out of town this weekend at a wedding and so we’re keeping their 10-month old. It’s a lot of work. Frankly, I don’t how we did it with our two or how they do it. He’s asleep now so I have time to write up the backblast.

    Seymour took us out

Welcome to FNG – Polly (nee Adrian). Polly was brought out by Webelos visiting from F3 Naperville. Originally from Birmingham, moved to Twin Hickory from west Chitown, into music and a former Rugby Union flanker. Several great naming alternatives including Susan Boyle.  We left the Twin Hickory themed Swinger and Lasagna Party for next time. Several Rocky alternatives came to mind as well. Finally, we settled on a Peaky Blinders theme – which Polly will now binge on as he has never seen it.

Polly is hardcore, and so is Polly – cigars and brown liquor on the horizon.

Prayer Requests: Lab Rat, Handshakes family, Lighthouse family.

  • Poplar exercises

At Gridiron today, we started out, after warm-up (SSHs, IWs, Don Quixote, US (Ukrainian Soldiers), Stretching), with 10 minutes of Burpees on Burpee Hill, in hopes that the Burpees will bring Homer back out to Gridiron. Almost expected him to sense the vibes and show up. But alas, no Homer. On the other hand, there was a rare Blue Moon appearance.

    Next, Stretching and then 11s:

Pullups and WWIIs. J’vile and I forget who else finished early so I didn’t get to finish my 11s. Darn!

Back to the parking lot for 3 rounds of 20, jumping over the line, in cadence, with a stretch in between.

Over to the stands by the football field for single count Bulgarian split squats (each leg) and Dips: 10, 9, 8, etc. down to 1.

Over to the parking lot in front of the school for more 11s: Mike Tysons and Plank-arm raises.

Back to the original parking lot for 1 leg balance. Impressive balance shown by Atilla and Tater. Tater was able to touch his nose to his shoe while maintaining his balance.

Finished up with Dollies, Heels to Heaven and one-legged APDs,

So, a bit of a geography lesson today: Ukraine (tribute to Lighthouse and the people of Ukraine), Bulgaria (split squats) and Alabama (APDs).

J’ville offered to work on Pinto’s Porsche. Pinto didn’t seem interested. Wonder why? I know Chum was disasppointed we didn’t do a lot of really long distance running.

I just checked and the Q-sheet is wide open. Lots of opportunities!

  • A “Special” PAX

Today was not a day for the casual and occasional PAX member.  Rain and dropping temps meant only a special kind of craziness would embrace the Gridiron gloom.  Here is how it went down for 5 noble warriors:

    • COP
      • SSH
      • Ukrainian soldiers
      • DQ
      • Helicopters
      • Arm circles
      • Suzanne Somers
      • Merkins
      • LBC
      • APD
    • Deck of destiny under the cover of the bus loop without the deck
    • Mosey back to the Pavilions for 25 step ups each leg
    • COT with YHC taking us out
    • Starbucks for some 2nd F

When Johnsonville rolled in at 6:55, we put wagers on who might be off-center enough to post on a miserable day.  Well, no surprise, Chum Bucket and Pigskin rolled in.  Gomer Pyle was a welcomed edition.  Great work by the PAX, and YHC was thoroughly educated by Gomer Pyle at 2nd F.  His military wisdom served for a great listen.  Thanks to the PAX members that braved the elements.  It was a fun one.

God is good all of the time!

  • Grid Iron is never easy

10 posted for a beautiful morning. Handshake and Probation joined us to bring down the average age about a decade. Somebody made a great observation…for the old guys AO, Grid Iron is never easy. 🙂

Warm up, followed by a jaunt to Burpee Hill for only 20 burpees (Q was tempted to start with 10 mins of burpees). Mosey to field where a new exercise was introduced (Bear Crawl 1-2-3) with 100 Merkins, 200 WW IIs and 300 Squats…with Bear Crawls in between. Gave the arms and legs a break with a modified Ab-Beast of WW IIs, Heels to Heaven, Crunchy Frog, Side Crunches, and American (renamed Ukrainian) Hammers. 10 count and off to jogging the 100 yard field, with 10 yard steps of burpees (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 5, 4, 3, 2, 1). End of the field we did 3 sets of 10 Big Boy Sit-up-Ups, jog to the top of the hill for 10 Merkins. Another 10 count and time to jog back, but pause for 10 burpees at midfield. Wrapped up play time on the field with 25 two count Ukrainian (F-Putin) Hammers. Stretched, mosey back, and ended with 20 Merkins.

  • B’fast buffet

Bear Crawl to the next corner for 50 x Imaginary Jump Ropes. Bear Crawl to the 25 yard line and complete half of a Merkin Ladder, running to the midfield for Merkins and running back to tag the sideline. Crawl the 50 for 100 x LBCs. Crawl to the next 25 for BLIMPs, running to the midfield for at least 10 reps of each exercise and running back. Crawl to the next corner for Jump Ropes. Crawl to midfield along the next goal line for Backpedal to the 10 and back, then to the 20 and back.

Crawl to the next corner for Jump Ropes, then resume the call to the 25 for BOMBs with at least 10 reps of each. Crawl to the 50 for LBCs, Crawl to the 25 for 60 second Elbow Plan, and finish the Bearimeter with a Crawl to the starting corner.

Stretch for a few minutes and COT. Sorry if I missed anything or anyone.

  • The Geese were Pootin
