Welcome back Johnsonville! It was good to see you back in action with a pain threshold of only 3, only when you breathe of course.  Well done.

When the rest of the PAX showed after coffee and doughnuts we were already 1/2 way through the Joey Logano.  YHC did notice Jville’s pace picked up when Conspiracy arrived.  Wilson on the other hand may have been a little GASSED today!  Just saying the nose knows.

Congrats to Wedding Singer on completing the 6 pack.  Great job!

Also Congrats to Bleeder on the double shot.  Excellent job setting the example for the younger guys.

Thanks for the help DK with the Q on the fly.

Great 2nd F today.  Enjoyed it.

  • A Couple of DD Twins and a Six Pack

    Sounds pretty good, huh?

7 Faithful posted for yet another crunchy workout at Gridiron, 4 of whom had started their day with a light jog at #Dogpile to prep for their real workout!

    The Thang

    15 x Imperial Walkers

    14 x Slow Deep Squats

First Run: Lunge first half, run second half to the end of the lot, 10 x squats, run backwards halfway and lunge to end.  Plank until everyone finishes.

Second Run: same as above, but replace squats with 10 x Merkins

Mosey to bleachers on soccer field for Lindsays (40’s) with Dips and Merkins ( x 30/10, 25/15, 20/20, 15/25, 10/30).

    COT

    Moleskin:

YHC, Earthworm and Wedding Singer were greeted with a beautiful sunrise along with some balmy double-digit temps.  Public schools have been out due to the snow all week, and so our AO canvas was almost untouched, making for some tricky footing.  Indian Runs on single-track surrounded by ice can be a dangerous endeavor, although YHC feels we did an admirable job prepping for the arrival of our first 6 Pack PAX member Lugnut.

The 4 DD’s arrived just as the Lindsays (in honor of our sidelined brother Jville) got underway, and the crew looked refreshed after their morning of coffee and donuts.  When asked how he felt about being on the final leg of the 6 Pack, I believe Lugnut was heard to say he was ready to do it again.  Way to post, Lugnut!  Always the element of style, Chum Bucket added capri socks to his capri pant winter workout ensemble.

Not a whole lot of talking during the Beast, which YHC has yet to fully be able to complete before running out of time; something to work on.   Mother Nature has truly tested this PAX this week, and I’m happy to report that we didn’t back down.  We have attacked it with Swirly-esque tenacity.  Also, be on the lookout for musically-themed Q from Wilson sometime soon, but there’s a chance that’s “only in my dreams.”

    Upcoming workouts:

    Tue: NoToll 0530

Wed: Swift Creek Middle (The Truth?) 0530

    Thur: 45MOM 0530

    Charge on! -BT

  • How far does this AO go?

Lug Nut planted the shovel flag in the frozen ground, and waited to see if he was the only one to show up. Shortly before start time, there was a Q sighting, and before all was said and done, 4 faithful PAX enjoyed some great fellowship and a good beatdown

    BEATDOWN:

COP: SSH x20, Merkins x10, Flutter Kicks x15, LBCs x20, Imperial Walkers x20
Mosey North along Pouncey Tract to Striker Park
Dirty MacDeuce: do 12 reps of 3 exercises IC and then run a lap.
    – Merkins, Hello Dolly, Jump Squats
    – CDD, Rosalita, Alternating Leg Lunges
    – Peter Parker Push-ups, WW2 Sit-ups, Calf Raises
    – Plank with jump up to hands and back, Reverse Crunches, Burpees
Mosey back to field in front of the school.
Kak-a-Laky Choo Choo – all PAX line Up along the sideline, with everyone side-by-side in the plank position. Last man in line gets up and hops over the legs of each PAX in the line and then planks at the end. Continue with each man until the plank line reaches the other sideline of the field. Turn back around and go approximately halfway back across the field
Mosey to the wall in front of the school
    Triple Check
    – First time: one PAX runs to cone and back, one PAX planks, remaining two PAX do People’s Chair. Once runner returns, rotate. Each group does each exercise 1x
    – Second and third time: one PAX runs to cone and back, one PAX planks, remaining two PAX do Balls to the Wall. Once runner returns, rotate. Each group does each exercise 2x

    FROM THE PEANUT GALLERY:

IHC carried his phone the whole way, with intent to do “Bring Sally Up” again. Time management was not performed well enough to get to it.

Incidentally, the Q felt a phantom buzz in his pocket, thinking it was @Viral calling to say he was lost on the way there. No buzz, no Viral. Phantom buzz continued through the day on Saturday.

T-claps to @Fudd for doubling up — coffee & donuts at #DogPile, and then killing it during the second half of the workout here.

Perhaps the first time that 100% of the PAX went for coffee afterwards? Great fellowship and the caffeine helps to offset the tendency to make it a lazy Saturday post-workout.

On this Valentine’s Day weekend, don’t forget to show your peeps that you love ’em!

@Lug Nut has laid out the challenge to the Richmond PAX — Can you hit all 6 workouts this week to call it a “6-Pack”? HDHH counts as bonus!

    ANNOUNCEMENTS:

NoToll – 5:30AM Tuesday at Huguenot Park. Q needed!

<To Be Named> 5:30AM Wednesday – New workout at Swift Creek Middle School. Lug Nut Q

HDHH – American Tap Room at Willow Lawn, 5-7PM on Wed 2/18

45MoM – 5:30AM Thursday at Mary Munford Elementary. Q needed!

RAMM – 5:30AM Friday at Mary Munford Elementary

DogPile – 6:00AM Saturday at Dogwood Dell

GridIron – 7:00AM Saturday at Pouncey Tract Park

  • Unpredictability

Another brisk winter morning in Richmond saw 8 faithful post to rise to LG’s challenge to do a “real man’s workout”. With some great fellowship and chatter along the way, the group seemed to enjoy this good ol’ beatdown.

    THE THANG

Jog to front of park near the old schoolhouse. COP – SSH x25, Merkins x11, Hello Dolly x17, Rosalia x16 (missing one exercise?)

Take a jog on the path along Pouncey Tract Rd toward the track, cross over the track to the bottom of the biggest & baddest hill at this AO. Start at baseline and do Jacob’s Ladder OYO — sprint to top of hill, do 1 burpee, sprint down to baseline. Turn around, sprint up again and do 2 burpees. Continue up to 5 burpees. Plank up at bottom when done.

Mosey around to the back of the school to the tennis courts.

Al Carmichael Push-o-Rama — sprint from baseline of first court to end line of 4th/final court and do 10x of the allotted exercise, then sprint back and do 10x of the allotted exercise. Plank and await further instructions. Allotted exercises: one arm push-up R/L, Peter Parker push-up, Werkins, Fingertip Push-ups, Diamond Pushups (selected by @Jolly Rancher, who called them “Crystal Push-ups”), and Carolina Dry Docks.

Thank your lucky stars that we’re done with tennis court… But not to be so. Still at tennis court, do Noah’s Ark — zig zag hop to beginning of 3rd court, sprint to end and back to baseline. Karaoke L down, sprint back. Karaoke R down, sprint back. Backwards run down, sprint back. Suicides (also selected by @Jolly Rancher) to end line of all 4 courts.

Pick up extra hats, gloves, etc. and head to front of the school by the wall for Triple Check. Partner 1 sprint to cone while Partner 2 does Balls to the Wall and Partner 3 plank.

3 minutes and a tiny bit of energy left? Perfect for Bring Sally Up. Push up position and go to up position every time the song says “Bring Sally Up” and down position at “Bring Sally Down”.

    MOLESKIN

The unpredictability theme of this workout was inspired by the following quote from “Build Your Own F3 Workout.pdf” given to the initial Richmond PAX by @OBT: We count cadence in a modified military style because it sets a rhythm for the pax and because it keeps people from budgeting their effort to reach the goal when you tell them beforehand that they have to do, say, 20 Merkins. Because the pax never know how long the leader is going to go for, they are forced to push their bodies to go for as long as they have to. This has a wonderful mental and physiological benefit; over time it teaches the pax that they can do far more than they ever would have allowed themselves to. It is the humble hope of IHC that this purpose was achieved in this workout.

IHC considered playing “King of the Hill” with the group, and also heading further along the path to Striker Park, but settled in between the School House and the road for that first COP.

The group was glad to be joined at the halfway mark (near the end of Al Carmichael Push-O-Rama) by @Wilson and @Oyster, who can officially claim “Double Down” status after they had their coffee & donuts at DogPile before coming to Gridiron.

T-claps to Johnsonville for posting with a few broken ribs from Sunday’s hike. Godspeed to recovery, brother. And good job with the flying EH to the umpire-in-training with the lawn chair.

@Wedding Singer’s sentiment: “I thought the tennis courts would never end”. Unpredictability achieved.

Bring Sally Up smoked every single one of the Pax. IHC has never seen that happen and it felt great. That might need to be a staple of Gridiron until we can claim mastery.

DON’T FORGET TO BUY FLOWERS AND/OR SOMETHING NICE FOR YOUR WIFE/GIRLFRIEND! If you don’t have restaurant reservations yet, you’re likely in trouble.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

    NoToll 0530 Tuesday 2/10 – Wilson’s Virgin Q!

    45 Minutes of Mary Thursday 2/12 – Q needed

    RAMM Friday 2/13 – Q needed

    DogPile Saturday 2/14 – Q needed

    Gridiron Saturday 2/14 – Q needed (Wilson??)

  • Poles, Pillars, and Monkey Rolls

Five of the Faithful initially posted for the ShovelFlag planting in the #gridiron Gloom and were soon joined by four more Faithful who needed an additional dose of #redpill after a solid #dogpile #beatdown.  The temperature was a refreshing 20 degrees.

    MOLESKIN

TClaps to Lug Nut for pushing through a first metatarsal/first proximal phalange malfunction.  He and brother Iron continue to post with All American enthusiasm that belies the Gloom.

Takeaway from the Pole to Poles: Loose Goose is a masterful lunger (despite later musings to the contrary) and Trophy’s high skip performance (kangaroo-like) is worthy of high praise.

Spirited chatter commenced immediately upon the arrival of the Dog Pile crew about half-way through the OYO 40s.  LG kindly instructed Wilson that the sequence of “squat, left knee to right elbow, squat, right knee to left elbow” counted as 1 ISW and not 2.  Conspiracy – demanding that the PAX weave through each Pillar, not every other Pillar – received mixed results with his “reset” attempt concerning the slalom runs.  It was observed that Johnsonville and Donor Kabob blindly succumbed to the brinksmanship; the rest of the PAX faithfully adhered to the Q’s original instructions.

The chatter escalated to smack talk during the Plankorama/6MOM, especially with DK being denied a partner and sent to a Pillar.  But the smack talk was temporarily quieted during the mosey to the Grid Iron end zone as the PAX contemplated the coming Monkey Rolls.  Conspiracy, Wilson, and DK – based on their superior athletic talents (err … age) – were volunteered to demo the exercise.  Despite the advantages of specific, detailed, and patient instruction, the “dream team” performed abysmally and were mocked heartily (uproarious laughter punctuated the mocking) – so bad, in fact, that the PAX called for the BlackTahoe.  Handicapped by exposure to the egregious demo, teams 2 and 3 fared only modestly better.  Let’s just say that improvement is in order – YouTube is reported to show octogenarians expertly executing Monkey Rolls without mouth guards, knee braces, and head protection.

Humility, though, is truly fleeting.  Speed eating his way to the bottom of the pie (humble) plate, one unnamed PAX (the usual suspect) let loose a relentless barrage concerning proper lunge technique as the PAX strained to the opposite end zone to put 6 on the board.

    COT announcements included:
    –  J’ville made a “last call” for the “Rugged Maniac” – commit now if interested.
    –   LG called for Q commitments for coming workouts.
    –   The Four State Challenge was discussed generally.  J’ville cautioned against participation by anyone other than the most virile – he discourages the faint-hearted.
    –   DK, J’ville, and Earthworm (maybe others) visiting “The Priest” tomorrow for a “confessional” hike with one very steep climb – meet at Daily Grind parking lot in time for prompt 0500 departure.

LG closed with a strong prayer of acknowledgment, gratitude, and supplication.  Amen.

    1 Corinthians 16:13-14

A damp morning greeted the PAX and Johnsonville took full advantage of the opportunity to return to first grade. Not a water pond was missed as he splashed his way through the morning.

Johsonville continued to impress by disregarding the Q’s instuction’s and taking an extra lap after DK’s 60 lbc’s. The PAX enjoyed a bonus 70 lbc’s afterwards.
YHC believe J’ville was enjoying his speedy lbc/run combo in an effort to show off for the ladies. Wait there were no ladies?

Iron was attempting to motivate a fartsacking and still gloveless Flintstone mentioned there’s a woman’s group that might be a better fit. Flintstone’s retort was a little less than F3 worthy. We hope to see you soon Flintstone!

Impressive speed continues to come from the legs of Wilson & Conspiracy. We may need to do a post race tech on their shoes next time. Nice job!

Iron was especially disappointed that we weren’t closer to the road when we did the monkey humpers.

Impressive attendance this morning considering YHC drove through driving rain and snow on the way.

  • Q had a vision…………..

    When: 1/17/15

    QIC: Wilson

The PAX: Johnsonville, Conspiracy, Doner Kebab, Trophy (FNG), Iron (FNG), Lugnut, Chum Bucket, Earthworm, Loose Goose, Wilson.

Ten made an appearance at the #Gridiron workout! With two in BEAST mode! Well done by Conspiracy & Chum for making it to TWO workouts! TWO FNG’s braved the relatively early/chilly morning for their first work out. Welcome Trophy & Iron!

    The Thang:

Normal greeting and anticipation around the flag.

Mosey to track. Q wanted two laps, but PAX was lagging! Only ¾ lap! The first diversion from the Wenkie!

Circle Up – Disclaimer – Cause we had TWO FNG’s.

30 Goofballs – NEW to the PAX. Look it up on F3. We looked silly!

    30 Mountain Climbers

    30 SSH

    30 Deep Squats

    20 Mekans

20 Airplanes – *NEW* exercise from Wilson’s Wife via Iron’s wife. Way to contribute out of the gate Iron!

Mosey to Pull Up Bars & partner up

Wilson’s Wife – As many as you can

Underhand Pull-ups (assisted) – as many as you can

    Merkans……added for fun!

    Mosey to the wall.

Triple Play – Started w/odd number of PAX – So Q got all confused, Goose strained him out!

    Peoples chair w/arms up

    Merkin

Run to cones – Lugnut & Iron appear to be competitive………maybe!

Plank – Southern Gentleman & Yankee Aggressor

15 Leg Raises w/ partner – add some resistance

    Sprint back

    Mosey to bleachers

Cibatta – Dips (Many thanks to Johnsonville for receiving delegation and being time keeper – even tho we would still be there if not for goose! Wilson really needs a watch!

    Moleskin

The Q woke up with a very specific laid out plan! (very reliant on the weinke) Started that way and as Earthworm stated later he had the Q energy. Extra spring in the step! Started with something fun and started to warm up!

PAX did AWESOME during Pull Ups & Shoulder Press (Wilson’s Wife) – gonna be summer before we know it. Gotta work the summer muscles!

Triple Play is when Q started to break down…..damn odd number of PAX! So instead of three of each three exercise in groups of 3, it was groups of 4. NO LONGER triple play. Then add Chum & Conspiracy and BOOM, Q just about lost it!

After the ab section of Q’s perfectly thought out workout, Fireman’s carry was up. Yeah, apparently piggy back ride is NOT a Fireman’s Carry according to Chum. I will defer to how it was rolled out to me! Could be as big as “what is a REAL burpee! Never know! The second half of the 100 yards was the wheelbarrow! Simple, right? EVERYONE knows the wheelbarrow! NOT! Conspiracy and Q finish ready to sprint back and what do we see……bear crawl, piggy back rides, walking, running.

Has the world just ended? Q was frustrated…………..and SMOKED. So we did it again………….SAME thing. Oh well…..I had Conspiracy next to me. He would buy into my punishment right? You bet! BURPEES and SPRINTING! Thanks to GOOSE for keeping Wilson in check and calling out my sprint was really NOT a sprint!

Q had discussion with FNG Trophy after about all the chatter during the end of the workout and he said “not me!”

Looks like Wilson’s next Q will be a cardio beat down! Back to the drawing board! Are Countdowns a thing of the past………..no rest!

Great job by the ENTIRE PAX and looking forward to Tuesday at #notoll! And again, welcome Iron & Trophy. Look forward to seeing you both!

    X’s & O’s for 2 minutes

    Moleskin:
25 degrees with the sunrise feels a lot warmer than 12 degrees in the dark. Shovel flags think so too.

TClaps to Conspiracy, Lug Nut & Johnsonville for making it to half of our workout after attending the first 6am Saturday workout in Richmond.

YHC learned what YHC stands for.

Lug Nut was not bare-legged. #awkward

YHC increased the Burp & Merck by 1 since the last time it was attempted. Next time we’ll go to 10.

Johnsonville appreciated the intensity of the final 18 minutes so much that his lower body rested (stopped responding?) during the X’s & O’s.

Chum Bucket wants to incorporate a tower climb into a future GridIron workout, but Wilson thinks we should get approval from his wife first.

  • Just relax and breathe easy…

As this was an “exploratory” test run for a new AO at Byrd Park, I encouraged the PAX to relax and breathe easy to help this go more smoothly.  It was a frosty morning for our little experiment, but I think we learned a lot and will be at it again next week.

    THANG:

Mosey to Carillon circle for warm-up:  Split Jumps, Larry Craigs, Mtn Climbers, bicycles

Mosey to VITA for to start the course:

    1. 3×10 pull-ups while your partner does squats
    2. mosey to rope where YHC and one other failed miserably on a rope climb.  YHC is blaming that on the cold and the chain on the bottom part of the rope.
    3. Mosey to rings for 2×10 curl-ups while partner does LBC
    4. Mosey to A Frame for up and over while partner does Dollys (Note: Conspiracy motivated a few of us to do this inverted)
    5. Mosey to single leg up lunges 2×10 ea leg
    6. Mosey to next bar for push fest: 20x merkins, 20x derkins, 20x larry criags
    7. Mosey to dip bars for 2×10 dips while partner does walking lunges
    8. Lunge walk to next tree and complete VITA

Mosey tour of AO led by Conspiracy followed by 4x run Carillon steps

2×10 box jumps on lower steps

Mosey to COT in Dogwood Dell

This really was a fun little experiment with about 3x more people than I expected.  That’s a lot of commitment for a relatively new region, and some of the PAX were off the next workout #TClaps.  We did have a flag provided by Bleeder who left it outside hise garage for our 0530 pickup.  Special thanks to Bleeder for not having the werewolf out that morning.

The AO truly has a lot of potential, and Conspiracy has a lot of experience working out there.  I think we have found a new home for our earlier Saturday workout, and the race is on to name it.  The leading contender so far is “DogPile” provided by Lug Nut.  The best part was rolling up on some other group who was about to go on a 0700 run, and they seemed very intrigued that we were finishing our workout.  EH happened.

  • It’s kind of a hill

12 posted for what might have been a downpour but ended up being a downright pleasant morning.  Spirits were high as YHC started an industry standard warm-up and then headed for the playground.

    THANG:

Mosey to lower field to learn it was closed.  YHC wonders if this is because of our intrepid bunch of ground scratchers.  Mosey to field inside track for COP:  SSH, clerkins, sit-ups, mtn climbers

Mosey to playground for 3x:  10 supine pull-ups, 20 dips, 20 marching planks

Mosey to baseball field for quick dash through the woods and back to the park where we ascended “the hill” (more of a bump in the field).

3x: 10 burpees, run to sand volleyball court, 10 jump squats, run back up hill

3x:  10 diamonds, run to volleyball court, 15 mtn climbers, run back up hill

    Hand-off to Conspiracy

Mosey over to the pull-up bars via the trail:

HIT Deconstructed Burpees – 30 secs on, 15 sec break after each.

    – air squats
    – thrusts

    – push ups

    – thrusts
    – squat jumps (whoops, we forgot these)
    – pull-ups (with spot, if needed)
    – burpees
    – chin-ups (with spot, if needed)
Mosey over to the shovel flag.
    Announcements:
    – There’s interest in doing the the Speak Up 5K as a group.  (Not really a CSAUP because it’s not stupid nor pointless). We’ll look into t-shirts. Scheduled for Sept 12, 2015.
    – The Scream is designing a Richmond F3 logo for t-shirts.
    – Earthworm wants a few guys to do the 4 State Challenge (hike 42 miles from VA, through MD, WV, and ending in PA) on the AT in June. http://www.backpacker.com/trips/maryland/appalachian-trail-four-state-challenge-pa-va/
    – Loose Goose threw down another challenge:  100 push-ups and 30 pull-ups per day in January.

    – Johnsonville lead the charge in requesting more pull-ups during our workouts. Challenge accepted!

    – Great seeing Orville back.  His New Years resolution was to exercise less and eat more. Not sure he’ll get much help from us.
    – We will conduct BrewThru #2 in place of our 1/22 standard 2nd F HDHH.  Stay tuned for more details, but it will start at 6 PM 1/22 at a location TBD.
