    The Legend of the 240

In 1974, the Swedish carmaker Volvo began to produce the legendary 240 model. The last 240 ever made was on May 5, 1993. Over the 20 years of production, 2.8 million units were built. The 240 remains the most reliable car ever built, with many of them still on the road running on their original drivetrain, a lot of them surpassing 500,000 miles. Many people know that the 240 is the safest car ever built, but did you know that the 240 is also incredibly fast? The standard 240 Turbo with a 2.1 liter engine could reach 62mph in 9 seconds, which matched the likes of Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and Porsche 944. By the end of the 1980s, the 240, otherwise known as “The Flying Brick,” had 6 wins out of 14 races in the European Touring Car Championship. Safe, fast, indestructible. The glories of this legendary car leads us all to inexorably exclaim, ALL HAIL THE 240!

So it is no surprise that at some point the glorious 240 should participate in an F3 workout. Today was the day, as 12 Westhoes gathered in the gloom at Hoedown. After some some standard COP on the blacktop and some complaining about getting our backs wet (c’mon Oyster), we commenced with the first routine, the 1st and 10s. Run 10 yards, perform 1 burpee and 10 merkins. Run to the end of the blacktop. Run back, stop at the 20 yardline, perform 2 burpees and 9 merkins. And so on.

Next was the main event after a mosey to the Third Church middle lot. There in the darkness sat the queen of the hour, the legendary 240. After dividing into 4 perfectly even groups of 3, we laid out the 4 stations. Group 1: SSHs. Group 2: WW2s. Group 3: Block Thrusters. Group 4: Push the Volvo around the circular lot, with one guy steering and the other 2 pushing. This proved to be more difficult than YHC anticipated, as the lot has more incline than we realized. 3 Rounds of 4 stations. We managed to get nearly through but audibled at 6:15 before the last group finished. Back to the flag for COT.

Announcements: Pigskin’s last Q tomorrow at Heartbreak Ridge as a 70 year old! We’re really hoping Pigskin will stop being so lazy when he’s 71.

  • Confused by Cold Cellars

Eight First Watch regulars, including one who declared it may never get cold enough to wear his Patriots beanie, gathered in the parking lot waiting for some natural light. Since no natural light existed, we made our own fireworks. Off we went to the front of the school for:

    The Thang

After a few PAX members dried off after COP, we moseyed back the other direction toward Lindsay. Despite a PAX suggestion for 31 minutes of Don Quixote’s, we did a downhill version of Love Hill. Partner up, one runs to the bottom then back up while partner is doing exercises. Exercises were crab walks, lunges, broad jumps. YHC drew the lucky straw and had Garbage Plate who apparently does crab walks on wheels.

    10 count then 11 Merkins.

Different partner then back up the hill. Exercises were polar bears, duck walks, broad-jump burpees up to the top.

    10 count then 12 merkins

Scurry back over to the parking lot, waiting for teachers to arrive, but no teachers today. We did 11s instead. Bernie sanders across the lot, then backwards up the hill for WWIIs. Forward run down the hill and across the lot for jump squats. Either Mr Rogers & YHC miscounted or everyone else cheated.

    13 merkins.

Quick circle for 20x Freddie Mercuries before numbers, names, and Garbage Plate took us out.

Announcements: WestHoe 2nd F at Firehouse subs noon 10/10.

NMS – Welcome to Iron Maiden fka Daniel. Ahh the naming during a hot potato, when no one wanted to be Q for the day. Originally we were working with Belshazzar, which is another name for Daniel and also the name of an Iron Maiden song with a reference to the writing on the wall dream from the Old Testament. Shadrach, Meshach, or Abednego were also mentioned but that super great idea was met with groans, even though Shadrach is a Beastie Boys song. Daniels first concert with the USAF band was less than inspiring (for obvious reasons) and while his most memorable concert with the Foo Fighters and some promise with potential monikers Monkey Wrench, Everlong and My Hero but our musical depth was rather shallow today. Daniel likes Star Wars, and Chewbacca was offered, and we failed to come up with any good Star Trek names, even though Viger or Ferengi might have worked. Honey Roger seemed to have some interest from the PAX but is just dang strange – we are at our Rogers quota already.

    Iron Maiden it is.

    Get some!

  • Weakness is Pain leaving the body

A baker’s dozen posted to see what Fudd had in store for Hoedown today. Bodos offered refreshing breath to any takers (there were none) and we were off.

Mosey to the front of the school for COP:

    SSH x 46

    DQ’s x 10

    Helicopters x 10

Dead Man Hang down to plank and then various yoga poses

    Arm Circles

    Flutter Kicks

Mosey to the Lindsay cul de sac, partner up. One partner runs to the top of the street while the other bear crawls. Switch and then take turns doing Bernie Sanders and then broad jump burpees until the team reaches the top.

Mosey to the alley on the side of the school for a triple check. Partner 1 does a wall sit, P2 does squats (with good form), and P3 runs to the front of the school around the lit up sign and back. Rinse and repeat until all 3 P’s have done 3 of each rotation.

Mosey to the bottom of the sloped asphalt next to the parking lot. Face down hill in plank and crawl bear up the hill by intervals called out by YHC, pausing to hold plank until the next interval, until all PAX reach the fence. Then do Heels to Heaven x 20.

Mosey back to the SF for Mary. Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out.

    NMS:

Bodos spent the pre-workout time drinking coffee before popping in a stick of gum just prior to launch. He was kind enough to offer a stick to everyone else although no one partook. YHC would be concerned with aspirating that thing but still appreciate the gesture. Seeing Bodos with coffee was surprising given that after doing the same at a recent Spider Run, he promptly had the urge to take his morning constitutional. This instigated a convo about the best tasting coffee and Bodos apparently has the best brew pot in the world. When YHC admitted that he uses a $30 brew pot from WalMart, Bodos was aghast. Doozy mentioned that he had tried a high dollar pot at one time, which promptly broke, and he was back to the $30 special himself. This made YHC feel a little less shame, however thoughts of expensive coffee continue to dance through my head……we’ll see what Santa has in store at Christmas. Mumblechatter was fairly heavy today which is typical for a Fudd Q, and welcome as far as I’m concerned. If no one’s talking that’s kind of boring IMO. YHC attempted to challenge the PAX in proper form of various exercises, as well as trying to motivate the PAX to maximum effort during the last plank of the Mary session around the SF. At one point, YHC said, “Remember…..weakness is pain leaving the body” which prompted immediate corrections from Upchuck and Splinter. However, the PAX knew what YHC was getting at and appreciation is felt for their tolerance of the occasional mistake. Mumblechatter continued post workout on Slack as there were no merkins performed during today’s beatdown, which was intentional due to YHC’s shoulder PT which is ongoing. Methinks a solid beatdown was still experienced, although I would defer to the PAX that were there for their opinions.

As always, it was an honor and a privilege to lead today. Never lose hope boys, and never stop chasing the wabbit!
