Tuckahoe Elementary

  • Big thanks to our Veterans

On a beautiful Veterans Day morning, 12 freezing weather loving PAX and I made the sacred pilgrimage from Hoedown headquarters at Tuckahoe Elementary to Kanawha Recreation Association (KRA).

Warm up (in front of three spectators):

15 Side straddle hops, 10 helicopters (in honor of the Jets score against the mighty Buffalo Bills, one better than the Richmond Spiders), 10 Don Quixotes and 10 front and back arm circles

First exercise:  For Veterans Day we did army crawls from the end of the school grounds to the flag pole and back.  I think I was one the last ones to finish which isn’t a good start.

Mosey to KRA by doing what I call a Merkin run.  For some historical context, my first F3 a little over two years ago was at Mary with Flipper as Q.  At the end, he had us run together and drop and do 10 Merkins, etc.  So I decided with this Merkin contest and my unexplainable desire to be at KRA, why not honor the great Flipper?  So we did ~80 merkins on the way there.

At KRA, we did a Dora with 100 Carolina Dry docks which I am told do not count as Merkins (sorry), 200 2 count mountain climbers and 300 flutter kicks.

After that fun, I tried to do elevens with WWIIs and jump squats.  Unfortunately I grossly underestimated the time it takes to go up and down KRA’s parking lot so we stopped about 2/3 the week into it.

We finished with the run and another ~80 merkins having to look out for cars which keeps things interesting when most of the PAX wear dark clothing.

Concluded with announcements (1.  There is an event that is listed on the backblast that Handshake mentioned at Ruth and Ollies in Carytown this Thursday at 5:30.  Handshake I had trouble logging in to the app so if can pass along details that would be great.  2) Marv mentioned a Thanksgiving day football game for under 14s.  Details for this are also on backblast)  and prayer.

Lastly I want to give thanks for all of our veterans.  They have done and continue to do a lot for our country.  When I take a step back and think about all of the freedoms we have (voting, religion, etc.) and the prosperity we have in America, I realize how lucky I am to be an American.   After Hoedown, I went to Tuckahoe Elementary for a Veterans Day assembly because my bro and law is a Marine and my younger daughter goes there.  It was a really cool ceremony.

Rain was everywhere.  On Lindsay Hill, it felt like the current could wash us away.  Our shirts were suction cups on any pavement adding a little extra resistance through hydraulics.  It was easy to get choked up when doing the count during LBCs.  Not the worst we have seen, but it was coming down.

Dressing for the rain was a unique reflection on individual preference.  A windbreaker with no hood, a couple had full on hooded parkas, t-shirt, t-shirt and hat….regardless we all got wet pretty quickly.  It’s also an individual preference in how people deal with the suck.  Let’s just say an overflowing gutter provided a gravity powered bidet for one Pax member.  They are nice and clean now.

    Announcements:

    • Marathon and Half Marathon this weekend.  Several Pax are running.  Cheer them on.
    • Is anyone doing a HDHH this month?

    Time to Taper,

  • Another Blow Out at Hoedown

A lucky 13 pugilists came forth on the day before the penultimate day of October to celebrate the start of the week and the 31st Anniversary of Thomas Hearns winning his fourth boxing title.  The glow-light runners on Forest tell the tale this way:

Marmaduke is collecting coats for the homeless…likely everyone of us has a closet with old stuff in it (YHC certainly does). If you haven’t worn it in 2 winters…consider the pride you will have seeing your coat keeping someone warm this winter.
BRR…early December.  BT is looking to be persuaded to register. Ankle tape, elbow pads, and a decent rake are all optional.

    NMS:
Hutton put it very well this morning.  “Did I miss a chili cook off this weekend?”  W.O.W.  The horn section came out in full force.  The PAX took “push yourself, don’t hurt yourself” to the edge.
YHC was happy to welcome HoneyDo back to Hoedown, thus the Wheelbarrow + Shoulder Press combination…YHC apologizes to the PAX for not including ZingFit in the evolutions.
YHC continues to be impressed with the PAX’s ability to come up with new ways to count reps. 2-count? 4-count?  By 5’s? By 10’s?   New math abounds…https://boingboing.net/2014/03/10/a-math-teacher-explains-new.html

    Enjoy the day, fellas.

    UpChuck spits the bit.

  • Who is Saab and what will he have me do….?

…two questions that YHC was asking himself during COP one year ago during his first F3 post.  YHC was thinking to himself during COP that if he could be in half the shape that Saab was after a few F3 workouts, then things would be ok.  After Slurpee and Keymaster made YHC run one mile from his house to the AO, YHC was already out of breath before the words “let’s mosey” were uttered by Saab.  Damn, YHC thought, I have already run/walked a mile (mostly uphill), I don’t think I can finish this workout!

In our normal and ordinary life, it was 35 degrees and dark this morning at Tuckahoe Elementary, but in our other life (F3 life), it was 70 and Sunny.  A stalwart 15 descended upon TES for light calisthenics.  This is what transpired….

    TIME UP!

Numberama, Namearama, Announcements and YHC took us out!

    NMS:

Wow!  What a year!  YHC could barely make the mile up to the AO on the morning of his first post and then he had to run the mile back home after the workout.  YHC admits, he walked a lot of it back home and it was mostly downhill.  It would take YHC a week to almost recover so that he could post at Hoedown again!  For the first few weeks, it was only Hoedown for YHC, until he got a little stronger and found out about other AO’s that F3RVA had during other days of the week.  After a clown car of 5 River Road Hills PAX made it to a 45MOM post, YHC knew that he was locked into the F3 world!

It only felt appropriate to re-play my first workout this morning.  Saab did a great job of beating my a*s, so I wanted to see how far I had come since that first morning.  YHC thinks he did a pretty good job of beating his own a*s this morning, too!  Who did the Q better?  I am not going to say because it would not be fair to Saab since he wasn’t there!!!  Safe travels for work, buddy!

YHC does know that the following is true:

1st F:  Like YHC wrote earlier in this post, he could barely run/walk the mile up and back during his first post, but he just ran over 10 miles last Friday at RAMM for a half marathon training run!  YHC would have to say that he is in the second best shape of his life at the age of 41 and it is all because of you, the fellow PAX members, that push me each morning!  Playing High School Football would be the beast shape he was ever in (Glory Days).

2nd F:  YHC considers all of you his friends and family!  He has been on camping trips with PAX members, served food to the homeless with PAX members, gone out to eat with fellow PAX members, and his contact list in his cell phone has grown substantially!  This may be the most important of the three F’s if YHC had to rank them!

3rd F:  YHC knows that he can post to an AO and someone else will be there to help YHC grow in his faith in others and in God.  Praying or speaking at the end of the workout is YHC’s favorite time of the workout!  YHC also knows that he has faith in the PAX to be there for each other in times of need.  FAITH, in general, is a strong thing and can mean everything to those that you come in contact with and share your lives with (friends, family, co-workers)

After 180 posts and 40 Q’s in his first year, YHC would like to just say, “THANK YOU!!!!

Life is good, but there is always room to make it better, especially for someone else!

    Kubota

    keep posting!

  • Little Breakdancers

9 strong PAX gathered at Hoedown for a perfect 60 degree morning workout.   A Conspiracy sighting was confirmed at 5:26a.  Mr. Holland arrived way early at 5:28a.  Warmup at the Tuckahoe ES flagpole with 25 SSH, 15 IW, 15 HC, 15 Merkins, 15 LBC & 20 plank to Merkin.  Mosey along Forest Ave towards the corner and happen upon a stack of bricks on Silverspring Dr. – line up for American Hammer time, passing the bricks down the PAX line and back.

Continued on to the corner office building on Ridge Road for a little 4 corner work.  Cumulative 10x Dive Bombers, 20x Monkey Humpers, 30x LBD’s (Little Breakdancers – totally unsanctioned yet unbelievably awesome exercise), 40x Flutter Kicks.

Mosey across the street & partner up for Rite Aid roundup – 3x around the building, partners alternating with people’s chair, donkey kicks & decline plank.  Victory lap with lunges, backward jog & karaoke.

Rewind the tape and mosey back the way we came for a 4 corners remix of 15x DB, MH, LBD and FK and American Hammer time deja vu on the way back to the flag.  Circle up for a ring of fire 10x merkins with exceptional style points awarded to Upchuck, Mr. Holland, Fireman Ed & BT.  Wrapped up with a Mary finale of heels to heaven, hip dips and side v-ups.

  • No watch on CC’s Day

12 mighty athletic specimens showed up on Columbus Day to honor the great explorer of the Bahamas.  For 10/8 the weather seemed a tad humid but that just means more sweat coming out.  The workout went like this:

Warm up – 16 Don Quixotes – in honor of Denver’s points scored against the surprising Jets JETS JETS JETS!; 15 Helicopters, 20 Freddie Mercurys, 25 side straddle hops and 10 Merkins

Headed over to Lindsay Court to which Upchuck scared me with a comment that the neighbors did not want us to use that street anymore (I scare easy).  Anyway, in honor of CC, we embarked on 1492s (year CC discovered the Bahamas).  First set was 14 burpees, run down to the bottom on Lindsay do 46 2 count flutter kicks, run up halfway do 46 more 2 count flutters.  Repeato with 14 merkins, 46 jump squats and 46 more jump squats

Head to Third Church say hi to the fellow that is outside his truck at 5:45 a.m. and proceed with partner wheelbarrows followed by 5 Derkins, watch truck fellow leave, bear crawl with 5 merkins, bear crawl back 5 more merkins.  Fella with truck is back perhaps admiring the 12 studs.  Mosey over to horseshoe.  This is the first time I asked Slurpy for a time check.

At horseshoe, get into groups of 3.  Partner 1 is doing a wall sit, Partner 2 is doing merkins, Partner 3 is running around the horseshoe.  Do this 3 times.  This is the second time I asked Slurpy for a time check.

Next is 100 PLTs followed by another time check from Slurpy.

We ended with a merkin ring of fire and my last time check from Slurpy.  I took the group out in prayer.

    Announcements:

Fudd is handling his last Richmond Q at Dogpile this Saturday.  Fudd will be going west and adopting the Broncos as his new team.  You will be missed.

Viral mentioned a tools event 11/10; go to Viral with details as I was not paying attention sorry Viral.

Musings:  I enjoyed my third Q (Upchuck thought it was my first and that is why he came out).  We had a good group this morning and next time I will have a flag and watch.

    The Moleskin

It’s amazing how much ground can be covered in one year.  This AO provides no exception.  Fueled by a Tuckahoe Takeover Q week and strong since inception, this AO truly provides a community workout with many Pax able to run/walk there.  A great way to kick off a week with a great group of guys.  Besides it’s F3RVA’s darkest AO with a true representation of Gloom.

It was good to see Swirly out to Hoedown this morning.  Sleeves were optional.  This was his first visit to the Hoedown except for the CSAUP exchange zone that will be remembered as Ronnie’s finest night.

Pew was up from Mobile where he is doing good work starting that region.  We may see him at a bootcamp tomorrow (Heartbreak or No Toll), so keep a lookout.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • Today was a good day……..and it’s got nothing to do with an AK

8 middle aged dudes who like to think of themselves as warriors shook off the pull of the fartsack to post for a celebration of several things.  The air was full of mist and the air was cool…..perfect conditions for a Fudd beatdown.  Here’s how it went down, more or less:

    COP

    SSH x 41

    Helicopters x 10

    Don Quixote x 10

    Merican x 15

    Crunchy Frogs x 10

    LBC x 20

    Arm Circles x 30 (15 forward, 15 backward)

    31 burpees OYO

10 count from Splinter and then mosey to the visitor’s parking lot for curb crawls, south curb to north and back again, increasing from one derkin up to five, repeat five and back down to one.  Due to the significant distance between curbs, YHC audibled after the first five and led the PAX to the front bus loop which has a much shorter distance between curbs.  Finished the last five evolutions there.

Mosey south on Forest to a left on Lakewood, then a left on Hillsdale and stop in front of Lockjaw’s house.

    APD’s x 31 in Lockjaw’s driveway.

Mosey south on Hillsdale and take a left on Lakewood and then a left on West Drive Circle.  Stop in front of #305 and do 17 “good” mericans in cadence.

Mosey north on West Drive, cross Hillsdale, run around the circle that gives the street its name, then stop halfway down the hill for Dora 123.  Teams of 2 did 100 mericans, 200 WWII situps, and 300 squats.  One man does the exercises while the other runs up the hill, around the circle, and back to his teammate.  Plank when done.

Mosey back to the flag for 3 minutes of Mary:

    Crunchy Frogs x 15

    Freddie Mercury x 20

    Flutter kicks x 31

    YHC took us out

    NMS

YHC had a lot to celebrate today, a 41st birthday, a contract on our house that was signed this past weekend, and a Redskins victory yesterday.  We’ll give an honorable mention to Tiger Woods who won his first victory since August 2013….1,876 day drought to be exact.  He may not have been the best husband, but you can’t help but admire someone who fought through all the demons, bad press, and scandal that he did along with the health issues and surgeries.  Hell, he couldn’t walk at one point a year or two ago and he embraced the suck through all of that and fought back to win the TOUR championship.  That’s baller if you ask me.  We should try to get him to an F3 workout sometime.

The 31 burpees OYO during COP was a continuation on a theme that was started by Slurpee (I think) and continued by Honeydo where we do the # of burpees equating to the final score of the Redskins in the preceding day’s game.  There was some Mumblechatter about switching to match the final score of the Jets going forward but the mumblechatter quickly died as the # of burpees increased.

YHC admits he did not realize the distance between curbs in the visitor’s lot.  The degree of difficulty increases exponentially with every foot over 10’ for curb crawls.  Kind of like the Richter scale for earthquakes.  So the 30 feet in that lot led to some seriously smoked guns, leading to the audible to the front of the school.

Lockjaw was not present this morning and, knowing how much he loves the Redskins (right?), YHC thought it would be a travesty to mosey past his house without some type of respectful gesture to include him in the celebration.  APD’s seemed apropos.  Glad none of the neighbors went out to get their paper at that time.

The 17 “good” mericans in front of 305 West Drive were in honor of the 17 years YHC spent in that house from age 4 to 21.  They were good years for the most part so we did “good” mericans with backs straight, chest hitting the ground, and plenty of groans per rep toward the end.

Dora’s were fun and the run up the hill and around the circle was just enough to get the heart pumping and blood flowing between sets of mericans, WW2 situps and squats.  Honeydo burned through the reps to help the time fly for YHC.  Other notable mentions were Splinter and BT who I think may have done an extra lap around the circle due to fast running…..well done gents!  Slurpee, Handshake, Garbage Plate, and Fireman Ed all pushed themselves hard, to their credit, and we were done with time to spare.

It was an honor to lead today gentlemen.  I signed up knowing it would be my birthday today and having no idea that my house would have a contract on it after we took it off the market several weeks ago.  It’s amazing what God will do if you go to him in humility and prayer and give him control of your future.  Many PAX have been kind enough to ask YHC over the past several months about the house, when are we moving, etc.  A wise man once said…..man plans and God laughs. It’s certainly felt that way for YHC this past summer, but thankfully we serve a loving God that cares for us more than we could possibly imagine…..at least, that’s what the Bible says.   And it also says that He has plans for us that are good….meant to help us and not to harm us…..plans to give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).  It’s only after you grind through the valleys and rise up the mountain on the other side that you can look back and see the purpose that He had for you during those rough days.  Commuting to and from Baltimore for the past 2 years and being apart from my family each week has sucked, but the experience has prepared me for the next step, and it’s changed me in good ways.  It’s given me more humility, through suffering, but I’m thankful for that.  Suffering is necessary in this life, I’ve come to realize.  It’s how God changes us into the person that He wants us to be.

This is all a long way of saying that I know some of you are going through rough times right now.  Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, lean on your fellow PAX, and keep your eyes on God, not on your problems.  Thank Him for the future he has in store for you….even if you can’t see it yet.  It’s there, and all it takes is faith the size of a mustard seed to make it your reality.

As I celebrate my birthday today, I give thanks for many blessings, including F3……for men that have become like brothers to me, that have been there for me during the good times and the bad.  I don’t think I’ll be in RVA a whole lot longer, but no matter where my family and I end up, it will always be my home, and the men of F3RVA will always be my brothers.

    Fudd out

  • Redskins, Bernie Sanders, and Serious Humidity

15 warriors resisted the fart sack  this morning and posted for a great start to the week.  Here’s how it went down:

9 Burpees = represents the number of points the Skins scored yesterday while being defeated.

    COP:

    Side Straddle Hop

    Copperhead Squats

    Merkins

    LBC’s

    Flutter Kicks

    Thang:

Quick lap around the neighborhood and back to the parking lot hill (going up to the blacktop).  Taking a page out of EF Hutton’s playbook we did the following:

Partner up:  Partner 1 does Bernie Sanders (Run backwards up, and run forward back down) 3 times while P2 performs Merkins and Burpees.  Then switch, until each team completes 100 merkins and 100 burpees together….

Mosey to the Top of Lindsay for the following:

-Pax Sprints down Lindsay all the way to the bottom, then partner up.  Partner carry all the way back up Lindsay….. Each time that partners switched during the carry, each man performed a set of booyah merkins…Once reaching the top of Lindsay, each man performed 3 sets of 20 partner leg tosses….

    Rinse and Repeat…

    -9 More Redskins related Burpees….

Mosey back to the flag for Ring of Fire and Cot (Gomer Pyle took us out)….

    NMS:

The humidity continued to be thick this morning in the RVA…. Mumblechatter was pretty light prior to 5:30 a.m., however, YHC learned from Honeydo that the skins lost and only scored 9 points yesterday.  Last Monday, Honeydo incorporated some Redskins statistical facts into our workout so I followed suit.

Upon YHC’s announcement of the Bernie Sanders exercise sequence, the PAX seemed almost universally unhappy with the number of Merkins and Burpees proposed….  Nonetheless we powered through….great work fellas!

Finally, Lindsay proved to be pretty difficult, particularly given the humidity levels.  That didn’t stop some PAX members from crushing it!  Also for the record, YHC hopes to never get in an official foot race of any kind with Splinter….As we sprinted down Lindsay, that dude reminded me of Justify rounding the turn for home in the Belmont Stakes… He was lightning fast while making it look like a stroll in the park….My short legs need to grow about 3 more feet to even stand a chance….Nice work Splinter!

Great to partner with EF Hutton and Handshake today….Have a great Monday!

Announcements: 4 year anniversary convergence at Dogpile. Followed by a cross country scoring event or a FNG friendly bootcamp, both at 7:05. Cookout to follow. CSAUP on 10/20 at Forest Hill Park – 7:00 a.m. start. Puppypile on 9/29.

Breaking Bread this Sunday Evening (5 or 6 p.m.).  Let me know if you’d like to join, I’ll be taking 2 of my 3 2.0’s….

  • Back to normal at Hoedown

Fifteen faithful found their way in the dark to Hoedown to find things back to the normal school routine:

Cop – SSH, Don Qs, Scorpion kicks, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Hillbillies. Redskins tribute: 24 Burpees for 24 pts in their win yesterday.

Mosey to Blacktop for 4 Corners: 10 V-Ups, 20, Hand Release Merkins, 30 Jump Squats, 40 WWII Situps. Partner up- Wheelbarrow width of blacktop, each man twice.

Head to field- 2 sets of sprints up n back. Then 3 sets of PLTs. Partners head to wall. 3 rounds of altnerating Donkey Kicks while other runs field, 5 pull ups and back. Then down to drop off circle for Triple Check of B2W, Flutterkicks, and run loop. Finish with 30 American Hammers. Handshake took us out.

NMS – School is back in session, 15 PAX at Hoedown, AO is dangerously dark, Saab talked about fallic symbols, Fudd was LIFO, and all is right with the world. 24 Burpees in the cop was a bit much bit HTTR!

We had 2 BRR runners post with Saab and Gomer Pyle, Aye!  They both looked fine after their long weekend. Mumblechatter was more about the Kubota/Gumbo Dogpile beat down than BRR stories.

Good to have Flange and Buttermilk out. And good words from Handshake at the end, can’t believe it has been 6 months. Time flies in the Gloom…

Announcements – 4 Year Anniversary next Saturday 9/22 and Slurpee has Breaking Bread on 9/23. He could use some more hands.

Have a great week men, Silent Assassin signing off.
