According to Big Data, YHC had not been to River Run since 2017. Needing a good group run for BRR preparation, he headed down to Bettie Weaver school. 5:30 came and went and no other cars turned into the parking lot. Route was one mile out and back up Twin Team hill 5 times. Need to take watch in for repairs because surely the pace wasn’t that slow.

Smoke on the Water
A magnificent 7 opted for some running as a way to enjoy this unseasonably cooler weather.
We headed down to Robious Park where we picked up the trail for the next 30 minutes and then headed back up to the VSF.
Sugar Sock took us out.
NMS
With this crew there is always a fair amount of mumble chatter. We stayed together as a group until a few made some diversions along the way. Ample discussion of upcoming brewing opportunities as well as progress on the summer tour.
The first few minutes on the trails reminded YHC of Ragnar. Trails in the dark is an entirely differently feel. The crew teams were the only ones sharing this morning with us as the waters were flat and enshrouded in a deep fog.
Announcements:
- YHC has a combined HDHH and hill run Q on 7/18. New location information will be available soon via pre-blast.
- Puppypile on 7/21 – Bring those 2.0s
- Summer Paddling Session continues with next put in this Friday or over the weekend. Sounds like we have a few interested. Let YHC know.

Cargo Shorts and Dutch Colonials
Four PAX braved the muggy weather to put in some miles at River Run this morning – all four thinking they may be solo with the regulars (Gumbo and Rosie) on hiatus.
All four chose the 4 mile route – through Tarrington, across Robious, down Twin Team hill, around the school loop. Rosco, Sugar Sock, and YHC ran as a group and discussed the finer points of fashion and housing in the late 80’s and early 90’s – the consensus (by at least two) was to keep the cargo shorts and ditch the Colonials.
Great running with you all this morning – sorry to leave you solo LugNut. Way to hold down the fort for the SOJ regulars.
Announcements:
– 4th of July convergence at Tredegar 7:00 – no other workouts that day.
– Puppy Pile on 7/21 @ 7:05~Why walk when you can Wheelbarrow?

River Loop…Repeat
3 SOJ natives (1 expat) and 1 Sheriff to keep order (although LIFO) started out the morning with some miles. For the 3 natives, it was a flat out and back 2-mile loop down to the River and back to the Flag – do 20 SSHs and 20 LBC at the Flag and the REPEAT as many times as possible for 45 minutes. YHC had to pull into pit-row after the first lap, but managed 2.5 for 5 miles. I believe Splinter and Rosie may have gotten in a full 3…I lost sight of them.
Rosco was not deterred when the PAX was gone. He headed through Tarrington and up Ashwell Drive hill for a strong 4+ miles.
COT, COR, NOR and YHC took us out.
Announcements:
- HR Derby is tomorrow. Don’t go to NoToll…go to Huguenot Little League behind Robious Elementary School. Bring a glove.
- July 4 convergence at Tredegar…see pre-blast.
Great run gents! Great to have Splinter back in the motherland and great to have Rosco back out after being away in steamy Charleston. Always good to run with (umm…after) Rosie. He is looking strong and ready for the weekend race with Shakedown and maybe TYA (?). You guys will kill it.
See you at the derby tomorrow!

Well, it’s not that hot
Not sure where the PAX was running this morning till all were at The Gloom! Gumbo and Crayola present upon arrival with Rosie quickly following. YHC was still smoked after yesterday’s impromptu 1/2 Marathon for Father’s Day!! PAX agreed to Tarrington Loop and 0530 down James River Drive the PAX went.
By the first hill, Rosie and Gumbo took lead with YHC and Crayola caboosing the run!! This morning’s run was all about introducing Crayola to Tarrington and getting an “early morning moral victory.” Rosie and Gumbo blazed ahead with 5 mile route around James River HS and circling back to check on YHC and Crayola= 4 mile route.
YHC has forgotten the streets that we traversed so “Tarrington Loop” sounds good to YHC!
Number-ama, Name-r-ama, Annoucements……Puppy Pile this Saturday, July 4 convergence at Tredgar. Rosie and Shakedown are running at 50K in 2 weeks.
NMS-Crayola, it was great to run with you this morning. Just what I needed to shake some stiffness out of my body!! Keep posting and YHC promises that workouts get easier. Great to see you in the gloom right after your virgin workout!
Rosie and Gumbo–way to push this morning. It is always great to see SOJ regulars before the work week begins!!

River Run Rollercoaster Sans the View
7 road warriors broke the hold this morning and started their work week off with a few miles, up and down and up and down again…The River Downs Roller Coaster was the order of the day….well, for those of us on time.
Vinny miscalculated the time it would take to make it through customs this morning and arrived a minute or so late – just enough time to catch a glimpse of Bleeder’s bright orange shirt, but not close enough to follow the scent. Nonetheless, Vinny put in some lonely miles around the James River park.
Rosie and DeVito took off like bandits and crushed the entire roller coaster. Way to go guys.
All in all, a great start to the week, and the sweat was rolling (and frankly, still is on YHC). Great job guys!
Have a great day!

Yes, up Twin Team!
YHC arrived this morning to BWES with 2 PAX members already on scene and quickly, 3 more arrived. 6 SOJ men posted this morning to start the week off right and clear the mind, body, and soul with a 4 and 5 mile run. Group for 4 miles and 5 miles given the route and silently 0530 came!
Out of BWES and up Twin Team. (Yes, Twin Team has commanded respect within F3 and should not be ignored!) UP Twin Team and R on Ellesmere. Ellesmere to E. Brigstock. 4 milers take a R on E. Brigstock back to Twin Team. 5 milers, L on E. Brigstock to Mt. Hill. R on Mt. Hill for a loop back to E. Brigstock and a L, back to Twin Team. Now, Rosie shot out of the start like a high caliber round=man with a purpose this am!! Wedding Singer and Roscoe partnered up for 4 mile and YHC, Gumbo, and Shakedown with 5 miles and Rosie crushing his own run!
Down Twin Team for a loop around JRHS and back to the flag. According to Garmin and other smart devices, just shy of 4 and 5 miles. With a few minutes to spare, individual exercises and awaiting Rosie’s return….just shy of 6 according to Rosie’s smart device!
Number-ama, Name-r-ama, and Announcements–summer challenge, Puppy Pile June 23.
YHC took us out!
NMS===Shakedown and Rosie toughed out 15 miles yesterday and back in the saddle for a few more this am. Evidently, a 50K is in the there future!! Pound the pavement men!! Outstanding too!!!! Rosie respect this am and Shakedown you too!! Plus, you need more velgro!!
Shakedown, always prepared with chairs as we awaited Rosie’s return…..perfect!
Roscoe, always on the straight and narrow!
Wedding Singer…head up and keep moving on. We have all been there with little ones, work, and life!! But, enjoy those little moments because they go by fast!!
Gumbo, I never heard of a bird loving a car as much as your robin loves yours!! Crazy man!!
Great running with Gumbo and Shakedown! Thanks for pushing YHC this morning!!! Way to start off our week!! Spread the light when applicable.

F3 RVA Summer Tour – Starts Saturday, May 26
https://youtu.be/Xf3mRZ7SHu0
According to Phineas and Ferb, there are 104 days of summer. What a better way to spend the summer than challenging yourself to visit all 24 F3 RVA AOs. Although procrastinators can wait as late as August 6 to start, it would be best to spread this challenge out over the entire summer. Once you complete the tour, you will have done the following:
- 14 bootcamps
- 7 runs including a trail run and evening run
- 2 Kettle Bell workouts
- 1 bike ride
Don’t let not having a kettle bell or bike prevent you from participating in this challenge. Borrow them if necessary.
The challenge starts starts on Saturday, May 26 and ends on Labor Day.

See you all this summer!

Welcome back
2 regulars and a Kotters posted at RiverRun for some early morning fun. Roads were mainly dry and YHC hadn’t thought much about the route today so we made it simple. As simple as going up Twin Team to start can be. Up Twin Team, right on Brigstock – go until the clock hits 23 min, turn around and come back. This is not much of a negative split since the out includes going up the hill and down coming back.
Devito finally succumbed to some of my EHing to get another runner out to RiverRun. I think seeing him at Wilson’s golf tournament helped a little. He mentioned how much he enjoys running early and kept a good pace considering he hasn’t run in a few months. Great to catch up with him and find out the extensive connections we have, from college roommates to in-laws. Lugnut was fresh off a week at the beach and hit the hill hard. Another flying EH attempted on the guy Gumbo and I saw a few weeks back. He’ll come around.
Great run today guys, feels good to start the morning getting the blood flowing.

Good sense of Direction
The two RiverRun regulars were preparing to depart on a run through the neighborhoods when a vehicle unfamiliar on Mondays rolled into the lot. Rosco popped out and with a couple instructions on the Tarrington route we headed out.
We tried to give Rosco some directions to skip the Ashwell Loop and have us catch up to him but apparently he is too fast for that. He made it up the hill and back down before YHC had a chance to catch up to him and give the next set of instructions. YHC and Gumbo split up to make sure we didn’t miss him and so Gumbo could visit his favorite blue box.
Rosco was waiting at the AO as YHC finished up and had made his way through the neighborhood. Good thing he has a good sense of direction and made it back to the AO alright. A few more visits to the RiverRun and he’ll have most of the roads down.
Sounds like Rosco might become a regular runner, great to have him out.
Discussions about the future of SOT, more info to follow.
Announcements:
