University of Richmond

  • Experimenting with Pizza Barefoot

15 runners -or at least we started with 15 runners – embraced the pollen and cooler temps for some miles.

Off we went around the lake, over the trail and ascending University Dr. A quick turn on the parkway and an immediate exit on Lakewood takes us to Ziontown. We then connected with University again to Gaymont and survey the First Watch AO. All was well.

4s head back on Westham to Glen to College to the trail/lake combo. 5s/6s drop down to Westham Station and the bat cave with 6s taking a detour down and up Ross.

    Bodos took us out.

  • Respect Respect

To celebrate TYA’s double respect the PAX ran his favorite route, Grooooooove. During the COT, our honored leader talked about being grateful for many things and prayed to be a better man, father, friend, etc. Notably absent, a better and more reliable backblast writer.

  • 6 Bands, 3 Nights

9 hard rockers charged up their metal for the latest edition of The Spider Run. Temperatures were 70 and sunny. According to the dog walkers at the first exchange zone, the following might have happened.

All runners, leave parking lot, turn left towards UR student center, bearing right up the hill on Richmond Way. Left onto Campus. Left onto College, keeping football stadium to your left down the hill.

Follow College and take a right onto University. Up the hill staying on University to Ridge. 4s turn around at Ridge, and return by the same route.

5/6s stay on University, do the quick right/left at Ralston to stay on University, and right onto Ziontown.

5s: turn around at Holmes and return by the same route BTTVSF.

6s: continue on Ziontown to Ridge. Right on Ridge, then right again at Walgreen’s to stay on Ridge and continue to Holmes. Turn around at Holmes and reverse your route BTTVSF.

Numbers, names, and Saab took the cold call to take us out. Today is the day to make a difference.

    Announcements:

  • March Madness Westham Style

How’s your bracket looking? No, not your men’s bracket. Your women’s NCAA bracket.

To honor the other March Madness Tournament (quick factoid…did you know that this is the first year the women have used March Madness for marketing their tournament? Depending on what half hearted internet research you do, you may find that the women originally didn’t want the phrase…that they wanted to do their own thing. That’s changed in recent years and now it’s all under one big March Madness Umbrella).

Anyway, to honor that bracket, we figured we’d all run through the women’s college part of the Westham neighborhood (although I don’t believe any of these colleges are playing this weekend in the D1 WBB Tournament).

    The Thang…

Head towards the baseball parking lot and get to college (street number one with college ties). Take a right on University (street #2). Take University to Westham Parkway (street #3…West Ham College of Technology is in London).

From there…hang a right on Baldwin (Street #4).

4s–Right on Rock Creek (not a college). Right on Sweet Briar (Street #5), right on Woodberry (Street with college ties #6). Take that to Horsepen. Horsepen to Devon. Devon to Ridge Top. Left on Chandler. Right on Gardiner. Gardiner more or less dumps you out on the trail connecting to College. Head south on College through the baseball parking lot and back to the flag.

5s–The head to Hollins (Street #7). Right on Hollins, right on Woodberry, right on Sweet Briar back to Baldwin. Baldwin to Brookside (probably a college somewhere, right? #8). Brookside to Bryn Mawr (definitely a college #9). Bryn Mawr to Woodberry. Woodberry to Horsepen. Horsepen South all the way to the dorm cut through…back to the flag from college.

6s–Same as the 5s but then left on Devon, right on RTop…left on Chandler. Up Chandler. Back down Chandler. Left on Gardiner. Gardiner to College from the trail…from there, we were supposed to go up Boatwright…instead we just went to Towana and came back to the flag that way.

    Lots of Hills. Go Baldwin!!

  • π

A dirty dozen came to run or walk this morning. The route was out the batcave to Westham Station, ascend the hill to River to pick up Westham Pkwy. A right on Glen Pkwy to Keller and then pick up Westhampton Way and UR Drive to the AO. That takes you to 3.12 miles, which is close enough for this group to π.

6s do that route a second time. 4s/5s do the ascent up to the main entrance and down the other side and back to the AO. 4s do it once. 5s do it twice.

    YHC took us out.

  • Floss Daily…

A dozen showed at varying times to run a variety of routes – including Mt Henrico and the one shown below.

Bone Thugs completed his first run that involved following the prescribed route. Whitesnake studied hard and by all accounts did not get lost.

Never too late to train for the Bear Creek 10M this weekend. Best wishes to the ~14 gents who will be running and consuming hot chicken soup.

    Saab abides

4 milers proceed straight through University to Westham. 5 milers take Wood to Lakewood, then to Westham.

  • Froot Loops

Eighteen. Yes, eighteen runners in the gloom set out for this crossover of winter and spring. Cool breezes and birds chirping.

Off to the lake and up by the baseball field to pick up the Robin’s Center and climb snake hill. A left on Edgehill takes us into the abyss. Pick up Three Chopt and a right on Patterson with an immediate left on Register Pkwy. Pick up W Franklin with a right.

4s turn right on Charles, 5s on Bevridge, 6s on Bevridge to Dustin to Maple. Everyone heads west on Patterson and returns the way the came in via Bandy and Boatwright.

    Marv took us out.

The air on Edgehill was fragrant with the smell of Froot Loops. Its a wonderful smell reminescent of youth, but in this case it was the smell of the Sassafras tree emerging from winter.

  • Back up the Mountain

Fourteen trekkers who didn’t get their fill from 2 weeks ago, returned to base camp for another summit attempt. The Q left early but passed along ample instructions. Mt Henrico it is again.

    The Route

    • Mount Henrico

Numbers, names, the Q took us out.

    Moleskin

This route does two things. 1. It never gets old. 2. It never gets easier.

Almost everyone made it to the top. There was still 1 that got lost but made it back to base camp successfully.

  • Running for a Friend

    Running for a Friend

Fourteen of the best gentlemen you could find, gathered to listen to today’s instructions. Two started early but were instructed to come back for further instructions. Routes were:

    The Route

    • 4s – Right out of the parking lot, left up Gateway, left on Campus
    • 5s – Left out of parking lot, slight right up Richmond Way, left on Gateway, left on Campus
    • 6s – Left out of parking lot, slight left along the lake, up by the baseball field and weinstein center, continue up Richmond Way, left on Gateway, left on Campus
    • Everyone cross Boatwright through the path then left on Wheeler
    • Convene at the bottom of Gardiner
    • 3x intervals up Gardiner, recovering over the hill and down Chandler
    • 3x intervals up Chandler, recovering south on Ridge Top, right on Shrewsbury, left on Horsepen, gather at Waveny
    • 1x interval up Dartmoor (audible)
    • 2x interval up Waveny
    • BTTVSF via fraternity row

Numbers, names, announcements, YHC took us out.

    Announcements

    • The bridge this weekend. See TYA.
    • Ash Wednesday service available at Regency, see Bodos for details

    Moleskin

Much to everyone’s likely disbelief, YHC hadn’t planned on intervals today until yesterday. Sometimes you need to push yourself harder than you normally would in order to clear your mind and soul of life’s complications. Today was one of those days for YHC.

Thank you all for enduring the repeats up those hills with me. Every step of mine was in memory of Bella.

  • Today, Gate = Entrance

13 strong arrived to run but engaged first in a lively debate over where the gate I mentioned might be. Whether they ran through the gate (or entrance) they all should have taken this route…

Run out the back the back gate (entrance) to UR onto River Road, cut through the River Road Shopping Center then over the Huguenot bridge and drop down onto Riverside Drive heading down River.
4s turned back at Oxford Parkway, 5s turned back at Rock Falls, and 6s took a right onto Rock Falls then up to Granite Hall Avenue and turn around.

Despite the initial confusion eventually the group figured it was just an out and back run. The moon lit the way nicely and provided a nice view of the River.

Numberama, Namerama, and YHC took us out. Prayers for the Freeman and St Chris families impacted by the car crash that took three young lives late last week up at JMU.

Note for next week’s spider run – TYA is Q and plans for the Mount Henrico route. He will post routes in a pre-blast and will be launching early to do the full route.
