    A rather balmy morning (compared to the last few) greeted the nine redwoods that gathered in the Bettie Weaver parking lot. Some knew YHC had the Q, others were flying blind. Loose Goose was just happy it wasn’t a Murph day.

    THANG

    Mosey to the left down James River Road to the delight of some that were afraid we were headed to Twin Team. At the first sight of an approaching car, stop for a quick COP of SSH, Helicopters, Peter Parkers, Shoulder Taps and HRMs.

    Continue down the road to the little lot in front of the school, 4 rounds of burp in a box in the handicap spots. 1 burpee, run a lap, 2 burpees, run a lap, up to 4. This is much better with more spots but quick stops was today’s theme. Next up the bus parking lot for a Lab Rat special, giant parking lot tracers.

    4 corners at the seldom used tennis courts with 10 merkins, 20 WWII, 30 MH, 40 Plank Jacks. Hit the mosey again around the back of the school. Pull up bar Morning Call. All PAX plank – 1 man does 5 pullups and on his count the others to merkins. Go through until everyone has a turn. Over the river and through the woods to other hidden pull up bars for Cindy. Yep, she’s back. 5 pull ups, 10 merkins, 15 squats – run to the sidewalk and back. Repeato for about 5 rounds.

    Mosey toward the playground, with a brief stop for YHC to determine that the dugout hill was a little dark for what YHC wanted to do. Playground it is where Tobit pointed out that there are yet more pull up bars. Triple check – Dead Hang, Freddies, run the track straightaway. 30 second dead hang is harder than it sounds. Mosey back to the flag and finish with burpees until 45 minutes was up (about 10 seconds). You paid for 45 minutes, that what you’ll get when I’ve got the Q.

    What a great morning. After the last few days in the low 20s this felt great. The goal today was to show some of the PAX all of the things that are at Twin Team that we don’t get to much. We all know the hill, track, parking lots but did you know there were so many pull up bars. Consensus was we don’t do enough, or at least the consensus in my mind. Apologies to the Dark Rider aka Mouse Trap, maybe a little more running than he wanted but he managed to modify to avoid hurting too bad. Excellent work today, it was a pleasure to lead you fine gentlemen through the gloom. Have a great Friday.

  • Giving it to the pavement

    13 PAX including one from north of the River came to Twin Team for a early morning beat down. According to the frozen frogs this is how it went:

    Awesome to have the honor to lead these men today. Props to Garbage Plate for coming to Twin Team for the first time. Tclaps to Orange Crush and Mousetrap for coming out despite nagging injuries. Cooper is a welcome addition to the PAX for sure. Not only does he distract PAX from burpees when needed, you can always “blame it on the dog”. Great job today gents!!

    • Wet wild warm and wonderful – enjoyed teasing the PAX today with the TTHill fake-out, and Wilson naturally provided ample mumble chatter entertainment. The title for today came from those of us who tried to use the swamp for the quarter pounder, and were quickly reminded of why it’s called the swamp – Abort! Abort! – to the track we retreated. YHC enjoyed seeing Wojo back out in the Gloom today. Let’s make it a great day gents! 
  • 2 Ladders and a Game of Horse

    10 Tanks took over the 530 hour at SOJ’s famous Friday AO: Twin Team. With a warm 36 degrees on the t-stat the PAX was eager to take advantage of a “not as cold as we expected morning.”

    Exercise I: Everyone’s Favorite Combo Ladder

    Kicking off YHC’s last SOJ Q of the 2019 calendar year, it was time to bring back the fan favorite Combo Ladder from YHC’s Twin Team Q debut.

    Mosey to the baseline of the black top.

    Bear crawl down to the other baseline and perform 6 exercises in consecutive order:

    • Copperhead Squats; Monkey Humpers; Merkins; Carolina Drydocks; two count flutters; reverse crunches

    lunge back to the baseline only to bear crawl back and repeato the exercises in descending rep count: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

    algore or shoot hoops for the six.

    Exercise II: F3 game of Horse

    Each PAX member wages an exercise and shoots. He scores –> rest of the pax completes exercises, PAX member misses -> all complete

    Exercises included: box cutters, no cheat merkins, burpees, front kicks, chuck norris merkins, mtn climbers, flutters, diamond merkins and YHC forgot the rest

    Only two of the PAX members have a shot at the varsity squad….. gloves and a NE Patriots style (deflated) game ball are to blame.

  • No snow but down hill slalom at Twin Team

    11 skiers looking for some down hill action in the cold weather at Twin Team. Here is what went down and up and then back down again.

    Mosey to the back of the ES for COP on the basketball court

    DQ’s, Helicopters, Jazersizes, Hip stretchers, Heals to Heaven and LBC’s

    Recover to mosey and PAX notices that YHC has dropped some trinkets from his pocket. YHC may have made a remark about needing the trinkets for Twin Team. Lots of mumble chatter about how we should make a right turn and head toward the HS rather than the inevitable hill.

    Stop at the monkey bars to stretch the arms out but found the metal bars too slick to really waist our time on

    Mosey to the bottom of the circle at the hill

    A YHC favorite Man Killers to get the calves going and get the cardio ready

    To the top of the hill YHC dropping eight glow stick trinkets along the way on the left then on the right, on the left and then on the right

    At the top let the PAX know this will not be a Twin Team suicide but we will have some fun in a slalom skiing type down hill workout. Twin Team has eight letters and there are eight glow sticks on the hill. As we head down stop and do 10 sets of the exersize that fits the letter from Twin Team. T = Tempo Merkins, W = Imperial Walkers, I = Incline Merkins, N = I have Idea call it LBC’s, T = Tempo Merkins again, E = SSH’s (why not), A = (?) and M = Merkins

    YHC will do a better job planning out the letter to match the exercise next time.

    Get to the bottom, get in line and ride the chair back to the top. We couldn’t find a chair so we made our own (indigenous people run)

    Numbers / Names

    YHC took us out in a little different way asking the PAX to lay on their backs and look at the world in a different way. YHC has had a very humbling experience with low income and had to depend on the government for assistance for a little while. The reason why I did this was not to ask for help for me and my family, God has provided. Its to say low income, poverty hunger is not an intercity only problem it live near you, if you look in a different way you may find the opportunity to help.

    NMS:

    Not a lot to say, we almost had to rename Hermes and Nancy Lopez today. YHC was waiting to hear Hermes toss his Marlowe durring the run back to the top but Upchuck is already taken. Nancy Lopez could be renamed Speedy Gonzales or Stair Climber for his run from the back to the front of the line on the steepest part of Twin Team.

  • The Perfect #6 at Twin Team

    6 studs posted in the gloom of Twin Team this morning – 5 to find out that Gumbo pulled a last-minute grab of the Q. With no plan in mind, YHC was thrilled to have a PAX of 6 and therefore, partner work and triple checks at my fingertips. This is what transpired:

    Mosey behind BWES to the blacktop for COP, including:

    • Jazzercises
    • DQs
    • SSHs
    • Imperial Walkers
    • Tempo Merkins
    • LBCs
    • Box Cutters

    THE THANG:

    Jacob’s double-sided ladder

    Form up on one side of the blacktop. Run to the other side, do 1 burpee. Backpedal back to starting side and do 1 merkin. Continue, adding 1 burpee and 1 merkin at each side until 7 and 7.

    A Suspended Triple-Check

    Mosey to the jungle gym where the Murph usually happens for Gumbo’s long awaited sharing of his signature suspended jerkins in the form of a lazy triple-check. The wet/icy bars were an added bonus.

    Partner 1 — suspends in air on the monkey-bars and does 10 jerkins (he is the timer). Partner 2 – does decline merkins with feet on the railroad ties edging the playground. Partner 3 – does squats. 3 times through.

    Mosey to the JRHS Parking Lot for a Proper’ish Dora

    Partner up. Partner 1 runs to touch the bus, does 10 SSHs and returns. Partner 1 works through a set of today’s proper dora exercise = 1 WWII, 2 merkins, 3 squats = 1 set. Flapjack and Rinse and Repeat until you complete 50 sets as a team.

    Mosey to the covered wall/walkway of JRHS for some wall-time.

    Find a new Partner. Partner 1 does 10 donkey kicks on the wall. Partner 2 holds balls to the wall (or pole) across the walkway. When the 10 DKs are done, meet in the middle for 10 PLTs each. Repeat for 2 rounds.

    Mosey back to BWES for Mary, including:

    • Flutter Kicks
    • Freddy Mercuries
    • APDs
    • American Hammers
    • 10 Werkins OYO.

    COT, Number-rama, Name-a-Rama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements:

    • Thanksgiving Day convergence at 45MOM lead by TYA. Can someone confirm time – is it 0600 or 0700?
    • Friday after Thanksgiving – come watch TYA run loops at Forest Hill Park. Join him if you’d like. See the pre-blast, but basically there will be various loops (road, trail, biking options) and you can mix and match. Just run or bike a loop every hour on the hour until you drop or choose to leave. BYO-anything you need.

    NMS:

    6 really is almost a perfect PAX size. Small and easy to control, yet all the partner/group exercise options are at your disposal. 12 and 18 are equally as versatile but start getting harder to control and push.   • An Original Workout Routine

    A terrific 12 fought off the warm comforts of the fart sack to converge on a almost frozen Twin Team AO. With a fierce gust coming from WAY north of the James, YHC knew it was best to keep our SOJ friends warm via some movin’ around. 530? Let’s Boogie.

    An original workout routine concept by YHC. Run to the end of the bball court and do 20 merkins, run back to the starting line and do 19 merkins….. work your way down to 1. 210 total.

  • Cold or being Fat “Murph”

    10 strong for the Murph today with an option for advance route on the last mile up Twin Team!
    Mossy to the main playground = 1mile
    10 rounds of the below with each round consisting of the following exercises.
    • 10 pullups
    • 20 Merkins
    • 30 squats
    After we completed the 10 rounds 3 headed back to the parking lot = 1 mile and 7 headed up twin team = 1 mile

  • Is this Monday or Friday

    9 almost able bodies showed up to what was supposed to be a boot camp at Twin Team but ended up more like a Monday morning River Run.

    Thanks to all the guys for breaking out the headlamps and giving the park playground a shot. YHC was not going to take us there because he didn’t figure everyone would have light but you guys crushed it by proving him wrong. If anyone was wondering what that big bright light was that cast a shadow over the entire East coast between 5:30 and 6:15 this morning, it wasn’t an early sunrise or the first sign of the Apocalypse. It was Gumbo with his head lamp.

  • I guess we’re on our own

    Despite various arrival times there was a nice round PAX of 6 waiting for the Q to show up at 0530. No Wojo so YHC took the potato and ran the crew behind the school for a warm up that included EFH’s Jazzercize along with some various planking and other stuff.

    Doozy – To the parking lot for touch a pole – Partner up. 1 up to 5 poles, while partner does squats, then flutters, then American Hammers. Getting to 15 without repeating took some running and some planning ahead. PeeDee finally caught on after 3 rounds or so.

    Loose Goose – More 4 corners, this time in the big parking lot – 15 merkins, 20 WWII, 25 Squats, 30 LBC. No time for a second round so he found some spots for us to repeat all of the above on the way back to the flag.

    YHC checked the Q sheet earlier this week but Wojo had it locked down so no worries right. Not so fast, apparently with UNC playing VT this weekend he must have been afraid the Hokie presence would be too strong. That is was with Radar, Loose Goose and I holding down the AO for the Hokies. With the size of the AO we recommend getting there before 0530 as Sonic found out. He searched some previous haunting grounds but we may have circled each other because he only found us at the end. Tclaps for sticking around and getting some miles in.

    Thanks for chipping in with the potato Goose and Doozy. PeeDee, BoBerry and Radar be prepared, the next potato could come your way. Excellent way to start a Friday.
