  • Caution: Benches freeze before road

A Naugty Nine hoped to earn their way onto the Nice list with some Christmas Eve work at HBR. The PAX were rewarded with an early Xmas gift from the kindhearted Q with:

COP- Invisible Jumprope, Hairy Rocketts, Don Qs, Merkins, Arm Circles, Flutterkicks, Scorpion Kicks. Head to football field for proper warm-up:

Sprint across field, jog back. Bear Crawl across then jog back. Backwards run across.

Mosey to Benches: YHC called for 3 sets of Box Jumps & Derkins, but apparently some PAX are keen on that “smile without missing teeth” look and with Benches covered in ICE an audible was called. Off to Heartbreak Hill:

10 Merkins at botton, run up, 10 V-Ups up top. Repeato increasing reps to 15 then 20. Then off to big field: Wheelbarrow across alternating PAX.

Over to DK wall for Triple check: Donkey Kicks, WWIIs, & run blacktop. Head back down to Jerkin Gym – 4 Sets of 8. Back to football field for some minute burpees: 7 in a minute, increase by 1 up to 10 per minute. Back to flag for some Mary. YHC took us out.

NMS – 5:29 we had 4 PAX and then quickly swelled to 9 as we made our way to the COP. Seymour was able to find us despite the Qs efforts to hide us. The benches really were a sheet of ice and YHC was glad to call of Box Jumps, heck even Derkins on them could be dangerous.

Good to have some non-HBR regulars out this morning. Kubota is stamping his winter break hall pass and good to have Mr Holland back out in the west end. YHC called the Bear Crawl to slow down LinkedIn only to see him lap us on the bear crawl. Someone find out what his kryptonite exercise is quick.

    Merry Christmas F3RVA!

  • Frozen Cheeks

A frozen four found their way out to Twin Team in Icy 20 degree conditions to dodge the ice and find a beatdown. After jogging a loop for the NewMarket clown car that was never to appear we did:

COP: SSH, Russian Soldiers, Helicopters, Merkins, LBCs. Head to parking lot for

THE THANG: Partner up for 5 minutes of increasing exercises:

Round 1: Burpees starting at 2, each man does, then increase by 2. Other man is holding Al Gore. We got up to 14. So 56 Burpees.

Round 2: After moving to the grass; Sets of increasing by 3 of WWIIs while other man holds 6 inches. Got up to 24. 108 WWIIs total.

Round 3: Merkins starting at 4 and going up by 4. Other man is doing squats. Got up to 28. 112 Merkins in total.

Round 4: Donkey kicks on the track entrance building: 5 DKs then increase by 5. Other man doing LBCs. Got up to 30. 105 DKs in total.

Long mosey back to BWES. Find grassy patch in front for: 3 sets of 20 PLTs. Then introduce BoBerry to Pickle Pounders. Finish up with Ring of Fire. YHC took us out.

NMS – YHC stole this idea from Garbage Plate of 5 minutes alternating & increasing exercises but altered it so the count increased from 2-5 for the 4 rounds. Turns out increasing sets of 4 merkins gets tough around the 20s.

56 Burpees got the PAX properly warmed up in the 20 degree weather.

5 full minutes on the frosty grass doing WWII and 6 inches left all with frozen cheeks for the remainder of the beatdown. Very little mumblechatter this morning besides PAX pointing out where the black ice was around the AO. YHC hadn’t met BoBerry before, always good to meet a newer dedicated PAX member, apparently YHC needs to get his 6 out ot SOJ more often. Great way to start of YHC’s 42nd year, aye!

  • Bear Creek 2019

8 PAX made their way out to Cumberland county to take on the Bear Creek 10 miler. Between bonus miles, first trail race, and gender inclusive shirt logos a good time was had by all.

THE THANG: Arrive at Bear Creek State Park in 22 degree weather. All PAX meet up and freeze up until start. All PAX complete 10 mile route, 2 PAX opted for extra loop of additional mile.

NMS – Overall success with no runners injured or lost during the race. The several fast runners took a wrong turn in mile 2 and ended up with a mile loop. Saab and Ollie were in that group. Saab took a branch to the forehead and was sporting a nice scrape post race. Tobit stayed on the course and ran a solid race for his first time out at Bear Creek. Mouse Trap chose to pop his race cherry (he’s never even run a 5k) with a difficult 10 mile trail race. TYA was his steady self and Bootleg ran a solid race. Once the sun got up things warmed up and conditions were perfect.

Cookout after was great as we scored the back porch of the main building. Burgers, brews, and Brunswick stew perked this PAX up. No Lab Rat Bog this year. Drive back topics included diverse topics of self-driving cars, alternative lower half CPR, and low set vaginas.

Good time as always and great practice for spring trail races coming up.

  • Caravan of cars at HBR

An even dozen, including 1 visitor, arrived at varying times to Heartbreak Ridge on a gorgeous morning. Again no Q so Handshake started us off:

COP: SSH, Don Qs, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Hairy Rocketts (horizonal version) aka inverted upside down Scorpion kicks. Back to main lot for: Quad Check – 1) B2tW, Flutterkicks, Merkins, Run lot & back. Head down to Jerkin Gym: 3 Sets of 10 Jerkins. Pass Q to Offshore:

Over to Heartbreak hill – Triple check of Merkins, WWIIs, Bernie Sanders up hill.

Hand Q to Garbage Plate, 1 lap of Indian Run then over to ramp: Crawl Bear up hill, bar shimmy down. 2 times. Q over to Honeydo: 3 sets of PLTs, back to flag for some Pickle Pounders. YHC took us out.

NMS – Today was textbook Hot Potato where PAX were pushed for the full 45 min. Quad check got us going from Handshake then other Qs never let up. Good to have Stump Jumper back visiting RVA. He debated whether on posting at Spider Run or HBR but in the end he gave us the perfect dozen number to work with. P-Trap, the married version, was back out having resting his shoulder injury. No clue whether the shoulder injury occurred on the Honeymoon or not, hence the need for more Pickle Pounder practice.

Fireman Ed was extra mouthy today, with his JETS drubbing on the Skins still on his mind. Low, low times for those who still HTTR. Lighthouse is officially a HBR regular now as YHC can’t remember a week he wasn’t there. Merkin count estimated in the 180-200 range based on Quad & Triple check inclusions. Your mileage may vary.

  • Beware of black ice

4 fools saw the 24 degree forecast and said why not, to post at 5 am. With the all PAX SOP we got moving:

COP: SSH, Don Qs, Merkins, Helicopters, Russian Soldiers, Scorpion Kicks (Kubotas call), and LBCs.

Kubota Q: Run the Grassy triangle with 10 Merkins at each corner. Backwards run the long section. Repeato 3 xs (?). Then 3 rounds of 20 PLTs.

Mosey over to RRCB lot. Wheelbarrow up & down lot.

EF Hutton Q: Dora 123 of HRMs, Mtn Climbers, & LBCs.

Handshake Q: 4 Corners (escalating) of 15 HRMs, 25 WWIIs, 35 Jump squats, & 45 SSHs. Honeydo Q with 87 seconds left – back to flag for 6 inches (Hooooolllllddddd it!) YHC took us out.

NMS – Cold temps but beautiful morning with full moon and dry ground. Only a handful of icy spots in the parking lot. Best sight at 5 am is 8 bare knees in the gloom. 3 of the PAX were sporting winter beards (kubota just barely) so faces were warm.

This new AO is headlamp recommended but not required. Wasn’t needed this morning as we did not tackle south ridge hill. EF Hutton was a gentleman and turned his lamp off before he started knocking out his PLTs. Any view seen during the PLTs need to remember the Seinfeld quote “There was shrinkage”

Day 2 of YHC getting handed the Hot Potato at the last second and getting stuck with the BB.

Handshake hit us up with 60 HRMs not 5 minutes after us doing 100 HRMs during the Dora. Total Merkin count for the morning was about 200. Week 3 of this experiment makes this “Kubota’s Sanity Check” workout a success.

  • A Rare Hot Potato at HBR

6 PAX were looking around at 5:30 perplexed by two unusual things: an open Q slot at Heartbreak Ridge and 65 degree weather on a morning where it was supposed to be snowing. Atilla took the reins and off we went:

COP: SSH, Don Qs, Hillbillies, HRMs, APDs, Helicopters. Mosey over to tennis courts: 3 rounds of Wheelbarrow to net, 10 Derkins each man. Pass Q to Handshake, who took us down to football field for a “Bea” or abbreviated beast of: Merkins, WWIIs, and Burpees. Q passed to Lighthouse: Head over to Jerkin Gym- fake, stop at end of field & partner up: 1 man runs lap while other does LBCs. 3 Laps.

Q passed to Honeydo – 1 minute left so back to flag & some Heels2Heaven.

NMS YHC knew the Q sheet was open last night but assumed some generous PAX member would step up. Instead we “Batteau’ed” it up with a Hot Potato. Atilla got us going. Handshake made the pax call out Burpees on the 3rd round. Lighthouse seems to like running by his short Q portion, pax be warned. Good to have Seymour back out, apparently boxing is a young non-professional man’s sport…

Squeeker is fast, that is all.

  • Dumpster diving at Hoedown

Eight eager PAX picked up a LoveSeat on the side of the road to make it an odd number 9 for some Merkins. We also did some other stuff:

COP: SSH, Merkins, Imperial Walkers, Hairy Rocketts, Merkins, Flutterkicks, Scorpion Kicks, Merkins. Mosey over to 3P dark lot for 4 corners: 20 Merkins, 30 WWIIs, 40 JumpSquats, 50 LBCS. Alternate run & bear crawl.

Over to Rite Aid lot: 4 Rounds of 10 Merkins, backwards run length then 5 Burpees. Back to TES, the blacktop: Broad Jump across, 20 Merkins then lunge back, 15 Heels2Heaven. Repeato x3. With parking lot lights finally on head over for: 5 Merkins per arrow, bear crawl around loop.

Back to Flag for Upchuck APDs, Hello Dollies, Freddy Mercury, & finish with 20 merkins. YHC took us out.

NMS: First legit cold morning of the fall with temps at 33. Long sleeve weather (SOP natch’) with some opting for hats as well. YHC was expecting more attendance with 5 am feeling like 6 am but 9 strong we were.

Plenty of merkins this morning, total count was 280 for those in the challenge. YHC decided afterward to sign up at day 4. Never too late sign up! Good to see Ponch and Love Seat back out in the gloom. Now if we can just get Keymaster and Slurpee back out at Hoedown…

  • A Grossly uneven Triple Check

Nine nimble warriors came out to find themselves wondering “is this fall” with summerlike weather at HBR. With a Q flummoxed by a late Loose Goose addition we did:

COP: SSH (assymetrial optional), Imperial Walkers, Helicopters, Merkins, LBCs, Scorpion Kics. Mosey to bus loop for Dora until PAX count was totaled to 9, scrap it off for Triple Check: Donkey Kicks, Reverse Cruches – full extension, run field & blacktop and back.

Head down to football field for: Goalpost Pullups – 4 Sets of 6. Over to bleachers for Benchkicks & Box Jumps: 20×10, 30×15, 40×20. Over to grass for Pickle Pounders. Then Jerkin Gym: 3 sets of 8. Finish with 3 sets up HBH, 10 WWIIs, back down, & 10 JumpSquats. Back to flag for APDs and Freddy Mercurys. YHC took us out.

NMS – Great morning to be out and to have 9. Handshake’s M has realized only morons run city/country streets in the dark at 5:30 so he was freed to post. Bodos made his maiden trip out to HBR and set the pace for the Hate-less crowd. Good to meet Squeeker, a double hater speedster who is also a W&M grad like Ronnie and YHC.

The Triple Check pairings were badly aligned with Bodos, Handshake, & Squeeker on one triple with Atilla, Loose Goose, and YHC making up team Clydesdale. Has anyone ever been lapped on a Triple Check before?

The PAX enjoyed the double arms dose of Pullups & Jerkins before we finished up on Heartbreak Hill. A varied mix of Mumblechatter this morning as Bodos learned about Garbage Plate’s favorite – Benchkicks, Ronnie shared about a case with sensitive appendage removals, and Atilla, unable to find a long sleeve shirt of his own, was undeterred and posted in his son’s Medium shirt, Aye!

  • A 45 Minute stroll around Godwin

3 PAX, all in their early 40s, came out to temps in the low 40s to the Circus. We did:

COP: SSH, Helicopters, IWs, Merkins, Flutterkicks. Grab bell then to back of school: 2 sets of 25 Donkey Kicks, bear crawl road then 40 swings. Mosey to soccer field – 2 Sets of Lawnmowers – 20 each arm. Over to Parking Lot of Shredded Gloves – 10 Lunges then 10 Merkin Rows across the lot. Then 3 rounds of Pullovers & Sit & Presses.

Find some dry grass – Boat & Canoe. Back up and to front of school – Run front & back then exercise of: Overhead Presses, Halos, & around world. Run between each exercise. Then back to normal area to finish with 2 min of Mary of: Freddy Mercurys, LBCs. YHC took us out.

NMS – YHC set double alarms to ensure he woke up for this Q. (Un)Luckily my dog woke me up at 4:00 and couldn’t get back to sleep. Atilla was also sleep deprived having watched the entire Nats game. With a small pax of 3, who are not the normal “Respect” aged CM’ers, we set off to cover a lot of ground.

The correctly named Lot of Shredded Gloves next to the track was discovered to be paved with broken glass, not asphalt. Good thing to know from now on.

  • 27 Minutes for Partner work

8 PAX were ready to go at 5:30 at Heartbreak Ridge on a beautiful fall morning. With one PAX needing to depart early we had a set time for some partner work to knock out:

COP in the grass: SSH, Imperial Walkers, Helicopters, Merkins, Heels2Heaven, Scorpion Kicks. Head to end of field: Partner up for Wheelbarrow across the field. Plank up & set of Pickle pounders at the end.

Down to Heartbreak Hill: Dora 123 of 100 Merkins, 200 American Hammers, 300 Jump Squats (audible at 150). Then over to Jerkin Gym for 4 sets of 8 Jerkins, just in time for Handshake to finish and him head home to his waiting M. The rest of the odd pax now did: Benchkicks & Derkins: 30/10, 40/15, 50/20. Head over to end of track grass section for quick mary: LBCs, Hello Dollys, pickle pounders. Back to parking lot: Follow the Arrows – 5 HRMs at each arrow, alternate Bear Crawl & lunges around lot. Back to flag for time: Flutterkicks until 6:15.

NMS: YHC arrived to see Handshake knocking out laps on the track. Asking him how much time we had with him there he responded an exact 5:57 so we had that much time with an even 8. We had to do the COP on the field since the ground was 100% dry with no dew, a rarity for HBR.

Several groans were heard off the bat as the Wheelbarrow the field started. Atilla was a beast on his section not leaving much work for YHC. Good to see Cobal back out in the Gloom. P-Trap appreciated the Pickle Pounder work as he needs the practice for his upcoming nuptuals. Maybe a trip to the Honeymoon Suite (gloom style) is in order in the next month if he posts again soon.

Garbage Plate was happy to get all of his favorites in: Scorpion Kicks, Benchkicks, and Bear Crawl. YHC always takes requests…
