  • D-Day at Mary

On a nice humid low 70s morning, 14 beasts showed up for a good beatdown from the Fireman.

COP (Warm Up) – 6 Don Quixotes (Saab kept going – I think he did 9), 6 OYO burpees, 19 Freddie Mercuries and 44 Side straddle hops.  So the PAX are wondering why the odd #s.  The reason is that on 6/6/1944 the Allies landed on Normandy for what we call D-Day.  After an “appropriate” recovery period we headed down for our first exercise.

First Exercise: In honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, we split up 75 burpees into 19 sets by doing a set of 4 burpees at each tree (1 extra since we are tough).

Second Exercise: At the next corner we bear crawled and at the first tree did 1 WWII, bear crawled to the next tree, did 2 WWIIs and so on. We stopped at the next corner.

Third Exercise: We did lunges from the road to half way across the tennis court. I was initially thinking of going all the way across the tennis court but after someone asked when we should stop I stopped halfway.

Fourth Exercise: We did modified Doras with a partner and did 75 Hand release Merkins, 150 2 count mountain climbers and 300 2 count flutter kicks.

5th Exercise: We gathered around the monkey bars and we had 2 rings of fire with 2 participants doing 5 chin ups while the others were in plank position, doing derkins or tricep dips. I thought this was going to go around once but the group was so fast we ended with 2 times around and Swirly and Goldberg going 3 times. I guess they love some chin ups.

Last exercise was 35 American hammers.

Announcements: Summer Tour still going on, sign up if you haven’t already. Early risers club (or last call for you youngens) is on 6/22 at Dog Pile/Byrd Park. See HoneyDo for details.

Musings: It was fun Qing Mary for the first time. The group tends to partake in more mumble chatter than at Hoedown or Heartbreak. And yes I am not a “personalized” trainer.

Welcome Pistorious (FNG). He did a great job keeping up with the burpees, bear crawls and hand release merkins. He works with prosthetics hence the name.

Lastly, let’s take time to remember those who lost their lives on D-day. Do Great things men!

  • The Wild Dogs of Windsor

YHC’s Garmin struck 5:30 and off we went, despite Swirly heading in the opposite direction calling Q. The Pax corrected and followed YHC to the soccer fields.

Moving to the side to avoid the official laying lines on the soccer field, we established our COP. SSH, Don Quixote, Copperhead Squats, HRM, and finish it off with Scorpion Kicks.

Mosey to the corner and cross Cary for Lindsays. The exercises were Box Cutters and Carolina Drydocks with a 6 inch hold for the six. Then progress a block for the next evolution. Berkshire, Cambridge, Tonbridge, Windsor Way, and Oxford were our exercise way points.

Ah, a beautiful field that cannot be resisted, especially by Dora. Dora 1,2,3s it is. Partner 1 runs across the field while partner 2 performs 100 Monkey Humpers, 200 LBC, and 300 2-count Flutter Kicks. The sight of the early morning commute filing past our Monkey Humpers most likely prompted calls to respective real estate agents and HOA throughout the morning.

It was during these exercises that two deer were spotted jogging through people’s yards. In retrospect, I am not sure if they were the wild dogs or we were. Probably a little bit of both.

Back down Windsor Way and cross Cary to Reveille UMC where we lined the turn around circle for Bear-O-Clock. Bear Crawl quarter round and perform 3 merkins, half way around for 6 merkins, three quarters around for 9 merkins, and a full revolution for 12 merkins.

Mosey around and back behind the church to the picnic shelter for Triple Check. Abyss Merkins, American Hammers, and run across the parking lot/backwards run back. Triple check was abbreviated due to time.

Mosey back to the VSF where YHC took us out.

    Time to Taper,

    Lockjaw

  • Block Thursday

16 Men of The Gloom arrived on another glorious morning to enjoy some cinder block fun.

5:30 came, YHC called “let mosey”, then headed to the car and open the trunk. Everyone grabbed a block and off we went.

    This how it went down

Short mosey to the grassy area next to the parking lot

COP (ALL IC) – SSH, DQ, Hillbillies, Tempo LBC’s, Merkins (On Cinder Block), Arm Circles

    THANG

    Mosey to the tennis court

Dora – 100 Workins (on the cinder blocks), 200 Goblet Squats, 300 sit up + press. Partner completes suicides using the tennis court lines

    Mosey to the blacktop

Merkin Row – Line up the cinder block in a straight line with plank length between each block. Moving down the line completing Right Arm on Block Merkin, Regular Merkin, and Left Arm on Block Merkin. Rinse and Repeat touching each block

Triple Check – Balls to the Wall, Good Mornings, and Run to fence and back

Hallelujah Mosey back to the SF for Numberrama, Namerama, Announcements and YHC took us out.

    MOLESKIN

Another Q, another cinder block workout. Some of the PAX had a feeling it was coming but lucky YHC was able to surprise most. Apologizes go out to Handshake and Loose Goose for getting a double dose of cinder block this week. Hopefully changing the exercises made it better (probability not)

Despite the large amount of sit up reps, the PAX pushed through in great time

Mumble Chatter seemed to be focused around teams completing the Dora but also Lab Rat sharing his bathroom “needed”

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

    SPIT ON THAT!!

  • Two churches

14 strong posted on a Thursday morning for a beatdown at Mary Mumford.

    The Thang

Mosey about 50 yards to side of school. 5x Don Quixote, 10x merkins, Mosey a little more to corner of Commonwealth and Cary, another COP with random exercises. Run across the street to the sidewalk on cary and Mosey to windsor way. Team up, first person runs to next intersection and back, other person does Lunges, crab dippers, and polar bears until both reach the intersection. Mosey to Grove Baptist Church field. 4 corners. First round mosey to first corner for 10 merkins, second corner, 20 copperhead squats, third corner 40 WWII setups, corners 4 40 side straddle hops. While waiting for the 6 continue to do SSH. Reverse direction and run backwards between the stations, add 5 to each exercise ending at the merkin station. Mosey to Windsor way, make your way to the next intersection doing lunges, crab dips, and polar bears in team. Mosey to intersection of Windsor way and Cary. Cross street and enter Reveille church. Short COP at side of school. Go through back entrance of school and mosey back to shovel flag, stopping several times for more merkins, mary exercises and other COP activities.

    NMM

I was kicking my own ass this morning. The reason we has so many COP and stops along the way was because I couldn’t get into a running rhythm. Even with the stops, I didn’t want to give the us a break, so I kept the exercises flowing.

Field at Grove Baptist was awesome today. They had cut the grass so it wasn’t its normal knee high grass. Only negative on the field was that on the south side of the field there were a bunch of divers/holes in the field. Ankle breakers if you were not careful.

Splinter brought us out and into the day we went.

  • Screw This, Let’s Play Some Swirly Ball…

14 gloom veterans posted to see if the Rivah Crossing Guard would allow this week’s SOJ-Q to cross enemy lines and lead a workout. Thankfully, the crossing guard was kind and YHC made it this morning. This is what ensued:

Mosey toward the courts and around the gravel track one lap to loosen up, then COP, including the following (all IC):

    • DQs (Saab-approved speed)
    • Helicopters (oh-baby, Saab was in heaven so far)
    • SSHs
    • No-Cheat Merkins (a DTH favorite) – 8-count exercise consisting of HRMs with Alternating Shoulder Taps at the top. No cheating on these bad boys. AND – despite the PAX’s reluctance, YHC thinks the 8-count worked out just fine.
    • Mountain Climbers
    • LBCs
    • Arm Circles

    THE THANG

Nobody Puts Dora in a Box

Partner 1 makes his way around the box drawn on the blacktop alternating between bear crawls and running each length. Partner 2 begins exercises. Flapjack and repeato until all exercises are complete. Exercises included: 100 merkins, 200 box cutters and 300 squats.

Where did the Q go? Did duty call?

Flatline lead the PAX in some plank-o-rama while YHC disappeared for a minute and returned with a football in hand…to the field!

    Swirly Ball

Partners from Dora are on opposite teams. The Q’s team is skins and the rules are – play like Ultimate Frisbee only 2 (or 3?) steps allowed with the ball then you have to throw it. Any drop = turnover (except on kickoffs). When the ball hits the ground EVERYONE has to do a burpee. When a team scores a touchdown, that team chooses an exercise and a rep # – defense has to do double. Game On!

    Whistle blows…back to the Flag.

COT, Number-Rama, Name-A-Rama and YHC took us out.

    Announcements/Prayer Requests:

    • Field Day – Saturday — see your region captain (Gumbo, Vinny, Kubota, Spit) for uniforms. Show up at least 5 minutes early and be prepared to go a few minutes past 7.
    • Orange Crush VQ at Twin Team tomorrow — bouncy house was promised. Hope he confirmed the weight limit!
    • Prayers up for a friend/co-worker of Flatline whose son in the Navy was found dead in barracks. Awful news. Treasure each day and each encounter with loved ones.

    NMS:

YHC had several things planned for today, including some other field work like Red Barchetta or Gunners (look it up — a few rounds of that with the right number of reps and it sounded like some pain), but half-way through the Dora, YHC had enough of the bear crawl and the reps and remembered the football in the back of his car. 14 PAX, 7v7, Get in the competition spirit before field day…PERFECT.

Note to self…get off the tracks when the Bodos Train is coming…Choo Choo! Yikes. Unfortunately, YHC’s back hair got got up in some of the tall grass and brought YHC to an abrupt halt on a go route (beautiful throw Swirly). Well, trains don’t stop on a dime, especially with a full head of steam. Ouch.

Some great flashbacks to glory days out there. Great throws, great catches. Some good old fashioned fun and competition. It was a blast fellas. Thanks for playing along!

    No More Gumbo For You!

    MOLESKIN

Always great to have the opportunity to Q at 45 MOM and to have a day that a theme can be used makes it even better. YHC enjoyed listening to the PAX comments on the teams regarding team in the Top 10 picks this year. TYA asked “When are we going to get to the good teams?”

The exercises were also selected today to keep the PAX together as much as possible. This was to make sure the SIX was never behind. One of the things that YHC took from completing the Grow Ruck last month is the fact that the PAX is only as good as the SIX. Some times we lose sight of this especially with our FNG’s.

Upchuck has Breaking Bread next Sunday the 28th. Please see if you can help him. Need someone to sign up for May and the rest of the year.

Today was “Swirly has his Annual Physical Day” I’m sure he and the doctor banged out some PLT’s or Wilson’s Dying Cockroaches together.

    NMS:

It was nice to get back in the saddle this morning with you men. YHC has had a rough couple of weeks with the Flu, kid’s being sick and work functions. This was the longest that YHC has gone in between posts since YHC started. YHC didn’t know if he would be fresh and ready to roll or feeling out of shape this morning. Let’s just say it was both. The rest of the PAX looked like they were in great shape and killed the workout. Well done!

When YHC returned home this morning, he looked at his Garmin App and checked out the map of what had been accomplished this morning. Let’s just say that YHC was amazed at what he saw. Unintentionally, we mapped out a perfect CROSS on the field with the Suicide 11’s and the DORA. With today being Maundy Thursday and tomorrow Good Friday, let’s reflect on the pain and suffering that our Savior Jesus Christ went through to save us from our sins. Also, there always seems to be a certain peace that we can enjoy during this Holy Week, so let’s try to soak that peace in.

Welcome to FNG – Time Out (Eric). Time Out is a Litigator at Hunton and Williams and works with Gumbo. Being from Michigan and a Michigan Wolverine’s fan, Chris Webber’s mishap in the NCAA Final against UNC was a fitting name. Plus, he ran to and from the workout and killed it! Great job and come on back!

Enjoyed it fellas and have a great rest of the day!

    19TH GREEN

    Hello Friends.

As they mark 85 years of a tradition unlike any other down in Augusta (Quadruple Respect Aye!), we the PAX of Mary Munford Country Club have a little tradition of our own, some might say ours is even richer with history.  With a few PAX members off on the European and South American Tour down in Bon Air and BFE, a slimmer field of 12 strong was ready to step up to the box, grip it and rip it, for an 0530 shotgun start.  Singer took off to survey the course before joining the PAX on the back nine.  Groundskeeper Spackler was out extra early lining the fairways by moonlight.  No problem, we’ll just play through.  YHC warms up in the clubhouse, so straight to the Driver on box # 1 with Merkins.  Practice?  Nah.  As the PAX took off from Amen Corner a slight groan was heard as YHC called for 4 rounds.  This ain’t the Senior’s Tour, though several PAX could stand to play the Seniors’ or Ladies’ tees given their distance out of the box.  Apologies to Bleeder, YHC was anticipating a solo round with the odd PAX prior to Singer’s arrival on #10, would have been happy to partner up.  After a couple of 3 putts and one shank off the box, YHC had the PAX at +3 thru 3, but let’s take a few Mulligans and call it PAR on the ol’ scorecard.  Where’s our club pro Lab Rat when you need him? YHC distracted by what he thought was Paulina in the gallery nearly took a TYA spike to the chin during the Caddie Leg Toss.  As always, YHC thoroughly enjoyed the round even without cart girls and a cooler full of col’ beer.  TYA encourages everyone to root for his fellow Minutemen.  Not sure either, but seems fitting.  May our days be filled with Eagles and Birdies.  Until next year…
