  • GridIron with Ample Ciabattas

Six of the faithful posted at #GridIron on a cold Saturday morning, the ground being covered by icy remnants of the prior week’s snow storm, which had thawed into slush and refrozen several times over. In light of the solidly frozen ground, Johnsonville plated a VSF and took the Q. This is how it went down, more or less:

COP: SSH x25, LS Squats x15, Don Quiote x25, Mountain Climbers x25

    Mini-mosey into picnic pavilion:
    chiabattas (step ups)
chiabattas (alt. merkins / decline merkins)

Mini-mosey onto sidewalk beside near gridiron:
chiabattas (alt. jump squats / Lt. Dans)

Mosey to far corner of gridiron:
chiabattas (alt. snurpees / Turkish getups)

Mosey to bus lane in front of school:
chiabattas (alt. mountain climbers / standing mountain climbers)
chiabattas (alt. LBCs / reverse crunches)

    Mosey up to track:
    1/4 mi. run
    chiabattas (bunny hops)
chiabattas (American hammers / Freddie Mercs)

    Mosey back to bus lane:
merkin ladder (up to five with bear crawl / back down to 1 with crab walk)

    Mosey back to picnic pavilion:
    box jumps x10
    dips x30

    COT with flag in hand

    Moleskin:

Chum Bucket had on workout tights that came down just below his knees. As soon as he got out of his car at Gridiron, he self-identified those as being his “Capri pants.”

Earthworm complained mildly about the lack of partner let tosses (aka pole smokers), and promised to make it up next week.

Cheetah, being 14 years old, was nearly impossible to wake up for the workout and nearly caused the Q to be late.

The merkin ladder was tough, especially coming after rapid-fire ciabattas. Many were sprawled out after that concluded.

    Great job, men! Johnsonville

    Mosey back to Parking Lot.

COT: Prayer of thanks and request for continued watch care.

    Moleskin:

The clock ran out – more pole smokers were anticipated; nonetheless a solid, no-frills workout with six exercises.

Despite heavy legs, Attila took command at the end of the workout and converted the mosey to a sprint – YHC neither anticipated the hard charge nor did he have the legs to counter. Well done, Attila – a veritable blitzkrieg deserving of your new handle.

Some speculation of the challenges Johnsonville may have faced last night – his leaving work early to “set his campsite before the rainfall” was likely not successful. His return to the GridIron (with the anticipated stories of January camping horror) is welcome.

    Matthew 11:28-30

  • Where is TYA?

7 strong (no TYA) and 1 FNG posted to Gridiron on a relatively warm 44 degree morning and the rain held off.  Here is how it went:

Mosey to upper field for COP: 30 SSH, 12 Merkins, 25 Flutterkicks, 25 IPs, 20 Richard Kimballs

Mosey to bus lane for:  Curb Crawls.  1 up to 8 Merkins

Mosey to main field to bleachers for:  Chiabattas    Alternating – Muscle Ups & Box Jumps

    Grab a bench for: 10 Decline Merkins , 20 Dips.  Repeato x4

Mosey to front of School for Triple Check – Run , Plank, Wall Sits

Mosey to lower field for:  PLTs – 25 each partner, Repeato x4.  Finish with 10 slowcount merkins

Mosey back to front of school for:  Donkey Kick Burpees – 3 Donkey kicks then do a burpee. x10

Mosey back to flag for some Mary:  100 LBCs, 30 Alabama Prom Dates, 20 Mountain Climbers

Earthworm led us out in prayer.  Jville tried to rename all the PAX

    NM:

Good work today men.  YHC arrived early to check the field conditions, which although soggy were not too bad for some field work.  At 45MoM on Thursday TYA told YHC he would be in attendance for a Honeydo Q but alas he apparently fartsacked.  If this continues YHC may develop a complex.

Tclaps to Wilson for the double dip, while Chum Bucket tried a new option – the half dip as he arrived 20 min in.  Upon seeing Chum arrive there was some quick calculations by the PAX on how he could DD so quickly, alas he was a LIFO. Better to LIFO than fartsack!

The derkins/dips after the Chiabattas smoked the PAX, including YHC.  The PAX were challenged with the donkey burpees, those will have to make an appearance at Dogpile soon.

Good work by White Deer (renamed from Pre per JVille) on his 2nd post and by Exile on his first post.  Jville insisted on the renaming Groh to Atilla the Hun.  YHC will leave it up to the Gridiron regulars to enforce the name change or keep it to Groh.

Afterwards at Coffee YHC learned that White Deer has some great stories and that Earthworm does not know how to comment on a Backblast, even though he has authored many a BB.  When YHC left Wilson was providing a tutorial to Earthworm.  We’ll see if it worked. Coffee after Gridiron is always a great start to the weekend.

    Go Redskins!

  • The Debut of Prefontaine at #GridIron

Eight of the faithful and one FNG (Prefontaine) posted an a chilly, but not frigid, January morning, to work off some of that holiday excess. Johnsonville planted a VSF and took the Q. This is how it went down, more or less:

    25x SSH
    25x DonQuiote
    25x Imperial Walkers
    25x LBCs

    Mosey to playground
    25x Long Slow Squats
11s (lat pulls on playground equipment and merkins)

    Mosey to pavilion behind playground
    25x Dollies
    11s (dips and step ups)

Mosey back to bus lane and meet up with double dippers
    25x hillbillies
    Short mosey to pillars
11s (standing mountain climbers and pole smokers)

Mosey to garden area behind school
    50x LBCs led by HoneyDo
    11s (lunges and wall thrusts)

    Mosey back to VSF. COT

    MOLESKIN:

Five of the PAX joined after the 2nd round of elevens, arriving en masse from #DogPile.

YHC was very pleased to get Prefontaine out after a year or more of headlocks. Prefontaine recently had a knee replaced and suffered some complications from that. He is back in good health and particularly strong at core work and ground & pound.

This workout was fairly leg-centric, largely because YHC is still nursing a shoulder injury brought on by my failed attempt at hitting 3000 burpees in December. The elevens with lunges and wall thrusts were the most challenging part of the workout. Everyone pushed themselves very hard through that. Swirly was the top-finisher.

The PAX enjoyed good fellowship at the post-workout coffeeteria. The Daily Grind, our normal Saturday establishment, was closed due to the holidays. Fortunately, we were able to secure a large table at a nearby Starbucks.

    Happy New Years and FEBA!

  • Tight Shirt (sans designer jeans)

A warm morning at the GridIron welcomed the PAX — three regulars and two “Home for Christmas.” Here’s how it went:

Mosey from Parking Lot to Courtyard of Short Pump Middle School for welcome and disclaimer.

COP: x25 SSHs IC, x25 IWs IC, x25 Air Squats, x25 DQs IC, x25 APDs IC, Superman x3, x25 Side Plank Dips (RH High) IC, x25 Side Plank Dips (LH High), and x25 Seal Jacks

Mosey to end of Pillars: x25 Pole Smokers Heels to Heaven, Penmanship (ALL CAPS), x25 PSHHs, Penmanship (lower case alternating single legs), x25 PSHHs, x25 Dollies IC, and x25 PSHHs

Mosey to Tennis Courts for the Battery: side line to side line – assortment of Karaokes, lunges, hops, back runs, high skips, butt kicks, and high knees with some air squats mixed in.

Mosey back to end of Pillars: x25 PSHHs, x25 APDs, x25 PSHHs, and cross beam hangs

    Mosey to Courtyard: x25 PLTs

Mosey (slalom) to start of Pillars: x25 PSHH

    50 yard Lunge and Karaoke.

    Mosey back to Parking Lot.

COT:  Groh took out the group with his customary strong prayer expressing gratitude for the abundance of our blessings, especially the gift of Jesus Christ.

    Moleskin:

Glad to have Jordache at the AO this morning – the former Richmonder showed us some Greensboro strong (and horrified the older Pax with mental images of late 70s designer jeans).  Also glad to have WD40 back from Atlanta for his sophomore posting (hope for brother Grub’s posting was dashed by sprained ankle suffered on a Christmas afternoon run).

Speaking of injuries, this morning’s mental Weinke was scrapped when Johnsonville announced a shoulder malady.  Query: was it an injury or was J’Ville’s simply trying to decelerate his upper body gains (barely concealed by his shirt) 26 days of his Burpee challenge?

No problem, though, with the workout adjustment – as HoneyDo will attest, GridIroners are exceedingly fond of core work. So the same was substituted in the place of Burpees, dips, and Merkins.

On the final mosey YHC got his normal “jump” only to be quickly reeled in and passed by WD40 who was instructed by Groh to chase down the old man. Note to Groh – victory by proxy does not count.

    John 1:1-5

  • Dr. Evil Graces #GridIron (and Shows RVA how to Burpee)

Eight of the faithful posted at #GridIron on a chilly December morning. Loose Goose planted a SF; Johnsonville took the Q; and this is how it went down:

    Parking lot Warmup:
    50x SSH
    25x Imperial Walkers
    25x LBC

    Mosey to pavilion behind playground:
    10x burpees
    25x hillbillies
    25x single leg stepups (right)
    25x single leg stepups (left)

    Mosey to pavilion near schoolhouse:
    10x burpees
    25x dips
    50x partner leg tosses

    Short mosey to schoolhouse:
triple check (people’s chair, rotating planks, run around volleyball court)

Indian Run to field in front of school.
Line up on sideline for elevens (burpees and double-count reverse crunches).

    Mosey to bus lane.
    Chiabatta broad jumps.

    Move onto grass.
    2 mins. of Mary
    25x Dollies
    2x superman

We were grateful to host Dr. Evil, who came from Charlotte for the holidays. During the triple play, he professed to being slow at burpees. I guess that was “slow” by Charlotte standards since he blew everyone away during the elevens. I managed to keep him from lapping me, but just barely. I think he was trying not to offend.

Chum Bucket double dipped, joining about half way through the workout.

Earthworm refused to Indian Run. However, he did make up for it later by leading a “Third F” event at coffeeteria. We took at look at, considered, and discussed Isaiah 9:6, which states:

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Great job, men. Have a Merry Christmas! Johnsonville

  • Ab Reformation

50 degrees and mostly sunny at the GridIron this morning.  3 of the PAX gathered in the quiet parking lot (youth football season has concluded) – the only noise being the grunts of J’Ville who decided to pregame by getting a jump on his daily Burpee count.  Inspired by J’Ville, YHC determined to keep it a simple, no frills, grind-it-out core-centric workout as follows:

    COP:

    X25 SSHs IC
    X25 Seal Jacks
    X25 IWs IC
    X25 APDs IC
    X25 DQs IC

Mosey onto WildCat GridIron and run a fly route to the scoreboard:

    X25 APDs IC

Sprint, run, and/or mosey back to picnic table pavilion by parking lot.

COT: Groh shared his experience this week at the funeral services for his good friend, Brian – an athlete who died young, a loving husband and father, and a firm believer in eternal life through his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. With her father firmly at her side, Brian’s wife and the mother of his three children, praised God for the exceptional life of her late husband, even as she mourned his passing and bravely shared the family’s sharp pain of missing her husband and the children’s father. Of the many things he could have asked of God, Brian asked that during his remaining earthly life he would be blessed with better knowing God. Groh is confident that Brian’s prayer was answered, and that Brian shared that knowledge with his family to his last breath. The Pax were blessed with this moving testimony. We closed in prayer, asking that in these difficult times Brian’s whole family be comforted, and expressing gratitude in this season of Advent for Jesus — Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.

Moleskin: There was some levity during the finishing run — J’ville was determined to finish first and he feebly alleges that YHC’s superior (and winning) pursuit angle was really a shortcut (Groh wisely stayed out of the fray, concluding that the dispute was beyond resolution). Otherwise, there was a solid business-like attitude at the AO this morning with negligible MumbleChatter.  Even quieter, appropriately so, during COT.

Next week at Coffeeteria (Daily Grind) – post-game fellowship taking a look at Isaiah 9:6. DogPilers: even if you don’t double-dip, please feel free to join us!

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

  • The Beast with 2x the Burpees at #Gridiron

Four of the faithful posted on a chilly Saturday morning with gloves on their hands and gloom on their faces. Johnsonville planted a VSF, and this is how it went down, more or less:

    COP:
    25x ssh
    25x don quiote
    10x merkins
    15x slow squats

    mosey to playground for COP:
    20x burpees OYO
    25x ab wheels
    25x lat pulls
    25x LBCs

mosey to small pavilion by playground for COP:
    8x burpees OYO
    25x dips
25x step ups (left foot lead)
25x step ups (right foot lead)

    mosey to school house
triple-play (wall sit, plank, run, repeat x3)

indian run to top field above track
The Beast (Carolina drydocs, burpees, freddie mercs, WWI situps, burpees, LBC)

    mosey to VSF

    discuss upcoming events
discuss friends/family in need of prayers
    COT

    MOLESKIN:

Perhaps because the burpees had been pre-announced, this workout featured only most hardened attendees and no double-dippers. Jolly Rancher is clearly the fastest at burpees, although I think it does help to be only 55″ tall.

Flip Phone is also quick at burpees. Fortunately, his “sprinting” during the Beast is not up to par with his burpeeing. Thus, YHC could keep up. Groh continues to show strong improvement across the board. YHC is hoping to add a weekday morning to Groh’s week.

When the workout ended, it was unusual not to see Earthworm take off at a 9.58 second/100m pace (for about 7-9 steps). We are looking forward to his return from Texas next week.

Congrats to those who ran the 10 miler this weekend. Looking forward to hearing about the race.

I have Q tomorrow at no toll. Hmm… What to do?

    Johnsonville

  • #GridIron — Plenty of Calories to Burn

Seven of the faithful posted at #GridIron during a comfortable late-autumn Saturday morning. Johnsonville planted a SF and took Q. This is how it went down, more or less:

    COP near SF
    25x ssh
    15x merkins
    elbow plank
    25x don quiote

Ciabatta (alternating between dips and squats)

    mosey to grassy knoll
    10 minutes of burpees

    mosey to old schoolhouse

    leg lifts

    Mosey to SF (Earthworm sprint!)

    COT

    Moleskin —
Ty Webb’s parents live down in Powhatan, and he was vising from Charlotte. We were glad he decided to post with us.

Ty Webb and Jolly Rancher ran together on the triple checks, and they seemed to get a bit competitive. Jolly Rancher knocked out 12 burpees per minute at the grassy knoll, but struggled later the workout. YHC suggested that he try to pace himself a bit better.

Earthworm lagged during the indian run, but then blew everyone out during the 100m “mosey” back to the SF. Unlike Jolly Rancher, Earthworm does know how to pace.

Groh had made the long track back from Alabama the day before to make F3. We like to think he is ultra-dedicated. I supposed it could be that he can tolerate family for only so long.

After having completed the 5000 merkin challenge about 10 days early, Chum Bucket is looking like he can bench press about 300 lbs.

Honey Do was the sole double dipper and showed no signs of wear.

  • Delusions of Safe Spaces

34 degrees and sunny at the GridIron this morning where 3 of the PAX gathered for an hour to open a week of Thanksgiving.  With the parking lot rapidly filling for Metro Youth Football playoff games, the Pax ran over to the Pillars behind Shot Pump Middle School for our own kickoff.  Here goes:

COP: X25 SSHs IC, X25 IWs IC, X25 DQs IC, X25 Squats IC, X25 Mountain Climbers IC, X25 APDs IC, Superman holds w arm rotations, and X25 CDDs IC.

Regular Slalom run to start of Pillars, continue run to GridIron end zone (pause for National Anthem), and sprint back to parking lot.

COT: Acknowledgment of answered prayers and expression of prayer concerns, including travel safety blessings and US leadership culminating take out prayer by YHC centered on gratitude and thanksgiving.

Moleskin: Lots of MumbleChatter involving MicroAgressions – Aye, good work.  Missed the DoubleDippers – hopefully the use of the AO hinterlands doesn’t require special recon skills.  Groh demonstrating really fine form; J’ville played MicroAggressor in Chief and taunted from the front most of the morning (though he was crushed on the final sprint by YHC who timed his jump expertly to the conclusion of the National Anthem).

Coffeeteria at the Daily Grind – excellent fellowship.

1 Chronicles 16:34 — Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
