  • New Take On an Old Pitchfork

Twenty hulking studs attacked some hills.  Shakedown was sweating before the run, not that there’s anything wrong with that.  Here’s where they went:

After cool dry mornings a week ago, the funk was back and funky as ever.  Like running through a greenhouse.  As such, stages of dress varied.  Glad the PAX is comfortable with that, just don’t expect YHC to finish with a BOM.  Great to have Shake’s FNG join us this morning.  Originally hailing from Switzerland, Swiss Miss and Toblerone were thrown out as potential names, but the PAX and YHC settled on Neutral.  Hoping Neutral had a positive experience and returns soon.

  • Mount Henrico

13 studs posted on a temperate Tuesday morning for a run through the Henrico county hills. Route was Mount Henrico. For six miles just a little over six, five milers, about 5.5 and 4 milers, just a few tenths of a mile over

    NMM

A few folks go temporarily lost on the run. Bone Thugs took the right onto Westham Parkway and kept going until he hit Patterson. Once he hit Patterson, he realized he went the wrong way. He turned around and asked for directions back to UR and made it back with a few more miles on his body and 15 minutes of extra running. Sippy also took a wrong turn, but righted himself very quickly, just an extra quarter mile. Although the Mount Henrico route is a little long on mileage, I think the extra time and energy is worth it. Tough run, complicated directions, but rewarding.

  • Pucker up

15 road warriors showed up for a Sunny and 72 degree run this morning. The route was real simple as I affectionately call this the Pucker route where you run across the Hugenot Bridge and take the curling ramp to Riverside Drive East and run for 22.5 minutes then turn around. This was a great workout for all levels and being more flat than most all other Spider Run routes made for a faster pace for most everyone this morning. A lot of mumble chatter on the ‘Bat Cave’ and it’s origin as some of the runners were not familiar with this part of the route.

Namerama, Numberama, YHC took us out in Prayer

This was a peaceful run this morning especially at the River with minimal traffic and left much time to reflect. It was great to see some faces that I have not seen in awhile and look forward to seeing you again in the gloom. Cheers….CB!

  • Table Tennis Day

19 Warriors emerged from their nice warm beds and ventured onto the University of Richmond for a Tuesday morning run. Weather was as nice as its going to be for this time of year in RVA.

The route was one we haven’t done for a couple of years. From the lake run up to the main entrance, take a right onto campus and run up to Three Chopt. Back down to the main entrance, over to Boatright Drive and up to the top of the hill to Three Chopt Again. Repeat this loop as many times as possible. Each segment of the route is just about 1 mile.

    NMM

Lots of mixed feedback on this route. I like it because you get to see all the other runners along the way as people make their way back and forth ton the hills. It is a hilly route and you get little flat running at all. Some like that, some do not. Faceplant loved the route as the directions are really simple and we have run these roads many times. No opportunity to get lost.

    TYA out

  • 10 dudes posted last Tuesday for a Spider run. Weather was hot and sticky. Route was past robins center out boatwright and to three chopt. Over to patterson, east on patterson and run until you hit 23 minutes. Turn right on the next road to Grove, Grove back to main entrance and back to shovel flag.

    TYA OUT

Apologies to Saab as YHC not only stole the Q, but also stole his route. All due respect. In a hurry to put the directions out and get moving YHC left out the loop around the lake and possibly the left on Westham to Lakewood for the 4s. Will make it up next time.

  • Generally Successful

Fourteen mostly aware PAX huddled in the new gathering spot for this week’s Spider Run. The call was snake river. 4s did one, 5s did two, 6s did four. Numbers, names, announcements, YHC took us out.

Almost everyone remembered, some were unaware, of the newly declared gathering spot for the AO. Shakedown appropriately suggested after the run that we should place a scout at the previous location for a few weeks. Noted and we will make that a practice for the month of July.

Quick note about parking in the new location. After a brief discussion with a UR staff member, here are the key notes:

    • Do not park in the “reserved” parking spots closest to the dry creek on the downside of the dam
    • If possible, park in the spots facing the road or the spots in the middle of the lot
    • The staff try to park in the parallel spots on the road so try to keep those open. They have to be there by 630 so it may be less of a big deal.

Snake river run sucked today. I think everyone would agree with that.

We will stick with this new location for the near future to see how it sticks. So far, so good.

Several PAX from Hoedown were tortured with extreme 11s on Lindsay Ct yesterday, YHC included.  Splinter was 1 shy of completion, so YHC figured he should return.  Plus it sucks in a way only F3 men can appreciate.  Marv’s weather app promises cooler less humid mornings this week, but today was not that.  It was hot and extremely moist.  Saab bucked the route, presumably in search of dryer air.  At the risk of starting a mutiny, F3RVA’s resident Sensei has suggested that the PAX meet at the parking lot on the corner of UR Dr and Richmond Way to avoid speeding golf carts, trash trucks, buses, and Swan Goose sh*t.  Some say that’s Blasphemy.  Next week will decide it.

  • Betting on the Rain

Thirteen gambling men tried their luck at some hills this morning, some lost and some won. YHC bet on the weather cooperating, but a freak storm surprised YHC and washed away all the hard work done the night before in preparing the hill routes and marking them out with chalk. YHC adapted, improvised and overcame and the PAX willingly followed along.

It went down like this, PAX met at the typical spot, YHC then asked everyone to pair up with someone of similar running abilities. Sabb lost a bet and got stuck with YHC. YHC had Q energy and couldn’t sleep the night before and was ready to run – sorry Sabbskie. After everyone paired up, YHC handed each team their very own dice. Moseyed on over to the bottom of Ridgeway Rd. each team rolls the dice and depending on the number it corresponded to a pre-determined (and washed away) number somewhere on the hill.

Roll a 2 – short run to the big puddle that YHC pointed out (shortest hill)

Roll a 1 – run to the top of Ridgeway with the Y intersection (medium hill)

Roll a 3 or 4 – run almost all the way up Ridgeway to the dogleg left (worst and steepest hill)

Roll a 5 or 6 – take the right fork off Ridgeway on up to Fairway View Rd T-intersection. (long hill, but less steep)

Everyone runs back down then roll the dice again to find out the next hill to run. Repeat-o until time is up. The audience poll had everyone doing around 3-4 miles.

Numbers and Names, then YHC took it out. Thank you to everyone for your kind words and prayers. YHC’s Mom successfully made it to the other side of surgery this afternoon and is happily eating hospital food and watching HGTV.

    See you in the gloom!
