I almost slept in this morning. Thankful I didn’t. You fine gents provide the motivation to be better and its a honor to know yinz.

  • Not a Race

Ten pavement pounders plus one wind pusher gathered on a somewhat chilly morning for today’s Spider Run. After ample discussion on game 5 of the Pens/Flyers game, routes were called.

The general route was, get to Westham, get to Patterson, get to Boatwright. Detailed directions were:

    • Thoughts are with all those PAX members traveling this week

    Moleskin

Lots of turns in this route but most are well known. 6s decided to evaluate which route was shorter at the base of Boatwright, continue down college or turn down campus. It wasn’t a race, but Marv got back first.

  • Operation 300

    The Mission

To celebrate the grit of the recent Ragnar runners and push the upper body to its absolute limit with a “300” themed beatdown.

    Warm-A-Rama

We began with a mosey through the dark, winding trails. The atmosphere was reminiscent of the Ragnar overnight legs—quiet, focused, and slightly damp. We kept the heart rate up with:

    • High Knees (in stride)
    • Butt Kickers (in stride)
    • Side Straddle Hops
    • 10-Down DQs (Extremely slow count) shall we continue for 45minutes?
    • Imperial Squat Walkers
    • Ukrainian Soldiers
    • Ww2s

    The Thang: Operation 300

    I. The Primary Ladder

The goal was to hit the magic 300 number right out of the gate. We performed a descending ladder of Merkins.

    • Count: 24, 23, 22… down to 1.
    • Cumulative Total: 300 Merkins.

    II. Eye of the Mericane

We moseyed to the pavilion to utilize the structure for the next phase.

    • Descending Ladder: Starting at 22 reps and working down. PAX went to each of the four corners to do:
    • – 25 WW2s
    • – 50 Alabama prom dates
    • – 75 LBCs
    • – 100 flutters

Return to the pavilion for a descending count of merkins

    III. The Dan-Merkin Hybrid

Combining the burn of the chest with the fire of the quads.

    • 18 Merkins / 2 Lieutenant Dans (1 Squat + 4 Lunges)
    • 17 Merkins / 3 Lieutenant Dans
    • Continuing the pattern until reaching 10 Merkins.

    IV. Paying the Toll

A quick transition to hit different muscle heads before heading to the courts.

    • 10 Incline Merkins
    • 9 Decline Merkins
    • This is where I snuck in an extra ten merkins on the pax

    V. Suicide Burpees

We took to the basketball courts for high-intensity sprints paired with descending Burpees.

    • Set 1: Suicides with Burpees at each of the three lines and the end line.
    • Reps: 8, 7, 6, 5.
    • Set 2: Final Suicides to empty the tank.
    • Reps: 4, 3, 2, 1.

    Mary

We gathered for a final round of core work to stabilize after the heavy upper-body load.

    • [Insert specific Mary exercises if applicable, e.g., LBCs, Flutter Kicks, Plank]

    Moleskin

Sixteen men showed up in the gloom today and absolutely crushed a high-volume Merkin workout. The trails provided the perfect backdrop, especially for those still feeling the Ragnar high. Taking the Merkin count from 24 down to 1 is a mental battle as much as a physical one, and no man was left behind.

COT / BOM: prayers out for Flatty and his trip to Germany for a year’s deployment. Also, coming up is NTBs departure party at DTH’s house

    Aye! Aye!

  • Average age 47.6

In a moment of zealousness, YHC jumped right into the exercises—until Upchuck called the Q out with a very fair “why aren’t we stretching first?” Audible made, and we kicked things off with a proper stretch to get loose.

From there, we moved into five rounds of Tabata-style paired exercises, with one lap run between each set. On the final round we do two laps.

Strong showing this morning with an average age of 47.6 years young.

Mumble chatter was entertaining as always:

    • Hair loss solutions and whether a trip to Turkey for plugs is in our future
    • College reunion stories and what’s changed (and what hasn’t)
    • Hitchhikers apparently signing up for the London Marathon
    • A surprisingly deep dive into Korean healthcare

Closed things out with a quick reflection on friendship—how as we get older, it takes more intentionality to stay connected, but mornings like this make it easier. Grateful for this group and the consistency, laughs, and accountability.

  • At Least We Showed Up for Breaking Bread

Two chefs loaded up and delivered a delicious meal in the latest edition of Breaking Bread, F3 RVA’s oldest continuously operating 3rd F (ok, we only have two 3rd F events…). Temperatures were 70 and sunny. According to the jealous police officers watching the food zip past the 2nd Precinct, the following might have happened:

    Tacos

Beef, lettuce, tomatoes, chips, beans, cheese, onions, and hard and/or soft shelled tacos were on the menu.

But, with the weather seasonally warm and comfortable, several of the guests were late arriving back to the facility. 2 were served, one we hope had a safe trip to the hospital, and several were late.

Numbers, names, and YHC took us out.

  • Speed, Balance & Power

The trifecta of kettlebell excellence…………and pretty much every other sport. Here is a brief summary of this morning’s workout for your viewing pleasure.

PAX of 7 mosey down to the tennis courts for Warm Up:
Side Straddle Hops, Jazzercise, Big Overhead Claps, Shoulder Taps, Copious Amounts of Freddy Mercuries, Knee Pulls, Open the Gate, Mario Jumps, Mummy Kicks, might have missed a couple. All done in perfect cadence with excellent form.

    Speed:

On the football field: Sprint to 50 yard line, 20 Kettlebell Swings, 8 Merkins. Run back to the end zone. Repeat and reduce the Swings by 2, and increase merkins by 2 until you get back to 8 and 20. 7 rounds total.

    Balance:

At the side of the tennis courts, Triple Check. Runner does suitcase carry with kettlebell. Others do High Shoulder Taps with Kettle, and Bend Overs (??).

Grab the kettle and walk along the top of the Great Wall of TryHard (GWOTH).

    Power:

Hold Kettle on chest and run to the top of Mt. Chaplain. At the summit: Goblet Squats, and Clean and Presses. Back to the Flag for COT! TryHard took us out.

Final Thoughts: Strong work by the PAX on an crisp and cool morning. I drew the inspiration from the workout from a line by my kid’s track coach. Much respect for Snuff who came out after finishing Ragnar over the weekend. Also, DTH returning from the mission field. Sounds like ultimate frisbee may be on the horizon! Perhaps this workout will pay off.

  • Green Gate Gauntlet

We ventured off campus this morning through the Green Gate Gauntlet…10 Merkins per light post, 25 WWIIs and Carolina Dy Docks if light wasn’t working.

Arrived at Green Gate for Triple Check of: Lunges, Squats and Runs. Went around the corner in front of the exercise studio for a series Heals to Heaven, Crunchy Frogs, American Hammers, and Irish Hammers. Around the corner for another Triple Check of: Merkins, Carolina Dry Docks, and Runs.

  • Mind. Body. Accountability. Spirit.

11 Redwoods descended upon RVA’s most versatile AO for to celebrate YHC most recent trek around the sun. As Upchuck rucked away at the top of the hour the balance followed YHC for a themed birthday workout.

    COP

Mosey to and circle up in front of the Carillon

misc. warm up exercises with compounding burpees in between

    1 – 2 -3 -4 -5, running total 15

quick and easy mosey down and back across the Carillon field to warm up the engineers

    6 burpees, running total 21

misc stretching and some broga… mosey to the cage

Mind: YHC hasn’t been able to do a proper pull up since his ‘ball playing days. That changes in this next year’s cycle.

5 sets of your best pull up variation for each PAX member. pull ups, dead arm hangs, jerkins, assisted pull ups, declines all apply

Body: As the PAX mosey to the Amphitheater, Hitch asked what YHC’s goals were for this next trip around the sun, a simple goal that YHC had for a while…. have YHC weight start with a “23” so to drop another 35-40 lbs. that progress will be made and achieved in gloom, gym, trails and most importantly, in the kitchen.

partner up for a triple check

burpee buy each round =>then pace car runs the perimeter of the amphitheater (5-5-6, running total 37)

other exercises were people’s chair and any ab variation of your choosing… more ab exercises for the six

Accountability: 37 will be the year YHC keeps his personal, professional and communal finances, commitments and engagements in check. Sometimes it’s as simple as counting correctly.

50 incline merkins and 50 jump squats before getting out of the amphitheaters. break up as you choose, but get em’ done. algore for the six. mosey back to the field

Spirit: A continuous commitment to keep the spirit alive, to continuously push to improve and to “leave it all on the field…” something fell out of habit too often in the last several years

2 – 25% gassers across the field… continuously building up

    2 – 50% gassers across the field….building up more

light mosey back across the field….

All out gasser back to the Carillon… leave it all on the field

    3 minutes of mary BTTF

merkin ring of fire to close things out.

Numberama, Namerama, YHC took us out

Please lift up those continuously in our prayers.

The Bridge needs a new local leader and Breaking Bread needs May covered

The last few months of Thirty-six taught YHC that the body keeps the receipts. For me it was the drink not taken, The rep not skipped, The hard conversation not dodged. All of it gets logged somewhere in the marrow, and when YHC showed up yesterday to lead, surrounded by men who push him, those receipts cashed in.

The mind quits first. Before the legs, before the lungs, before the hands. So you train it like a muscle — reps, discomfort, showing up on the days you’d rather not. Fatherhood has taught YHC that. The ruck and the bar keep reminding him.

The body is the temple. Accountability is the foundation underneath it. You can pray in a temple with cracked walls, but it won’t hold a storm. Accountability is the daily concrete — to the M, to the 2.0s, to the PAX, to the future version of yourself who’s already counting on you. It’s saying you’ll be there and being there. It’s writing the check your mouth wrote.

The spirit is what’s left when the noise quiets down. It’s why we drag ourselves out of warm beds before the sun with people we love. It’s the part of you that knows the difference between being alive and actually living.

Thirty-six was the proof of concept. Thirty-seven is the scale-up.

To the PAX who posted yesterday — thank you. If you’re reading this somewhere in your own fight, rebuilding the body or rebuilding the family — YHC sees you.

    Keep posting. Onward. Wojo out.
